Job choice questions
Edited on Sat Jul-17-10 09:21 AM by panAmerican
Has anyone else ever been offered a position after just a phone interview? I feel some misgivings about potentially "walking in blind," since I didn't meet anyone face-to-face. On the other hand, I am reassured knowing that this company is a financial powerhouse, whose name everyone would recognize.

There is also the matter of being an overtime-eligible W2 hourly contract employee on paper, but I was told verbally that the client expects a "professional day" (8 to 10 hours). They also told me I could work out a deal with management to use the extra time toward personal time off. Should I at least give this a shot? The money's huge, but it's a 2-hour commute each way.

On the other hand, I was also offered another contract-to-perm position with half that commute and less money. Either place is a big step up from where I am leaving, both in terms of money and title. Bottom line is leaving a 50-minute commute job with high stress, to a 70-minute commute for 21% more money and SUPERB quality of life. Or instead go for a 2-HOUR commute for 45% more money, also high stress job.

How would you choose?

1. 70-minute commute for 21% more money and SUPERB quality of life
Ditch the high stress jobs.

2. If the 21% increase is satisfying enough, I'd go with the shorter commute

An additional 50 of commuting wouldn't be worth it for me.

But if you've got plans for the money and the commute might be worth it. It probably wouldn't be for me.

I have 15 min drive to my job and that's the way I like it.

5. Here's how I am mentally trying to justify the longer commute
If I was a business owner, I should expect to work 50-60+ hours a week, right? Or if I needed a PT job in addition to a FT job, I would expect to put in those kind of hours. Also, the 2nd job would put me a good amount above 100K/year, while the 2nd would only put me in the ballpark.

On the other hand, I'm getting a little fed up of high stress jobs, and it might do me good physically and mentally to slow down.
