Trinity: "A Foul and Awesome Display"

It was at 5:30 a.m. on this day 65 years ago the world's first atomic bomb exploded over a portion of the New Mexico desert known as the Jornada del Muerto - Journey of the Dead Man. A witness described the fireball as "the brightest light I have ever seen - it blasted, it pounced, it bored its way right through you. It was a vision which was seen with more than the eye. It was seen to last forever."

"I am become Death, the shatterer of worlds." - lead physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, quoting from The Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text.

"Now we are all sons of bitches." - Trinity test director Kenneth Bainbridge.

3. I often wonder
what it would be like to live in a world without the threat of nuclear annihilation. My parents, born respectively 5 and 7 years before the outbreak of WW2 were part of the very last generation to have lived under such a scenario.

k & r

4. It would be a world in which the Soviet Union and the USA had a catastrophic conventional war..
Worse than WWII.

Nuclear armed states basically do not go to war with each other, the leaders will pay the price (personal death) if they do so the leaders choose not to go to war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties

World War II casualty statistics vary greatly. Estimates of total dead range from 50 million to over 70 million.36 The sources cited on this page document an estimated death toll in World War II of 62 to 78 million, making it the deadliest war ever. When scholarly sources differ on the number of deaths in a country, a range of war losses is given, in order to inform readers that the death toll is disputed. Civilians killed totaled from 40 to 52 million, including 13 to 20 million from war-related disease and famine. Total military dead: from 22 to 25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 5 million prisoners of war.
