Teabagger Mark Williams proves his racism in interview with Tamron Hall

I’m getting sick and tired of politicians, the media and other leaders having to tip toe around calling the teabaggers,* bigots. To quote John Wayne this is getting “rigoddamndiculous.”

Today during an interview with Tamron Hall on MSNBC, Mark Williams, who is a spokesperson for a teabagger group, defended an offensive letter he posted on the internet yesterday. Even though it was meant to be satirical, his use of the word “colored” just crossed so many lines and reinforces the meme that his group is in fact racist.

He defended the use of the word by pointing to the fact the actual name of the NAACP, is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In doing so he shows his absolute ignorance of this nation’s history as well as the circumstances that lead to the NAACP’s creation. The word is dated and in most cases it is meant to be offensive to African Americans, however when it comes to the NAACP it is accepted and to many of us it serves as a reminder of how far this nation has come since the organization’s founding.

Williams used the word to attempt to attack the credibility of NAACP president Ben Jealous, fortunately Hall was not having it, push backed on him wanting to call out the NAACP for its use of the word “colored” and told him “we are not even going to go there.”

Regardless Williams kept on saying “colored” this, “colored” that, “colored,” “colored,” “colored.”

He also went on to accuse the NAACP and other groups of being agent provocateurs, responsible for any racism on display at there events.

Teabaggers and others on the right who use race, ethnic background, religion and/or sexual orientation to divide us, have gotten away with this crap for too long and it needs to stop.

Since the Reagan administration whenever anyone calls out bigotry, the accused bigots push back and accuse those calling them out on their bigotry as being bigots. Unfortunately in this day and age of talk radio, the Internet and cable news networks the bigots have managed to change the conversation and force folks to tread carefully when calling them out.

You think I’m imagining this? Think about what happens and the reaction whenever our nation’s first African American president, Barack Obama addresses the issue of race.

Its a sad state of affairs.

EDITORS' NOTE: Join the Color of Change in demanding that the teabaggers choose to denounce Williams or admit they're a haven for bigots.

*I refuse to defame a special moment in American history but comparing this ignorant band of blithering idiots to the true patriots who took part in the Boston Tea Party.

3. Saying it's a "joke" or "satirical" doesn't excuse it.
It's the only defense the pigs use. It's not a defense. It's an excuse. And a bad one.

10. yeah, no kidding -- "racist" and "satirical" aren't mutually exclusive
Satire is just the excuse to spout their bigoted notions.

5. His excuse was pretty flimsy
He blamed the racist signs on "agent provocateurs", yet I noticed no one in charge at these tea parties removed the signs. They were there on proud display for everyone to see. If the tea parties really aren't full of racists, then someone would have demanded the racist signs be removed--no matter who was carrying them.

8. If they were "agent provacateurs" why were they not called out? I mean the Tea Party crowd is not

shy about escorting people who they disapprove of out of their events.

Witness this gentleman who escorts a group of young African American girls out of the 9/12 protest because he suspected they represented ACORN.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOPsla-MyLk

He's yelling like a jackass at these little girls and no one in the crowd tells him to back off. Some of them even join in. He even has the audacity to accuse one of the little girls of punching him to the cop, after he fucking chased them around yelling at them.

11. Yeah, that's my experience as well.
It's almost tempting to go to one of their stupid rallies and demand someone get rid of a racist sign just to watch the crowd froth at the mouth and scream for the head of the person that's trying to get rid of the racists. Because you just *know* that's what will happen.

16. Doesn't that video piss you off? I mean if that guy chased me around like that

I'd tread on his self righteous face. Its easy for people like him to be abusive to women and kids but I really doubt he would challenge someone who would give him a fair fight.

9. ...and then the Republicans wonder why 95% of Black voters won't support them.
Thank you, Mark Williams, for your "witty" letter that just reinforces everything that we already know about the right-wing Republican view of Black people and the organizations they support and that led their struggle for civil rights. And then they have the gall to praise MLK... if they were intellectually honest, they would criticize MLK as well.

12. The Use Of The Word Colored Was The Least Offensive Bit Of That Screed.
The whole thing was offensive. The stereotyping was ghastly.

14. They don't understand that "colored" is used in a historical context. Keeping the name is keeping

the significance of the history behind it behind it.

And from what I understand its not generally considered offensive to say "person of color".

13. Here is the text of Williams' racist letter:
Dear Mr. Lincoln

We Colored People have taken a vote and decided that we don’t cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!

In fact we held a big meeting and took a vote in Kansas City this week. We voted to condemn a political revival of that old abolitionist spirit called the ‘tea party movement’.

The tea party position to “end the bailouts” for example is just silly. Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn’t that what we want all Coloreds to strive for? What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bail outs directly to us coloreds! Of course, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the only responsible party that should be granted the right to disperse the funds.

And the ridiculous idea of “reduce the size and intrusiveness of government.” What kind of massa would ever not want to control my life? As Coloreds we must have somebody care for us otherwise we would be on our own, have to think for ourselves and make decisions!

The racist tea parties also demand that the government “stop the out of control spending.” Again, they directly target Colored People. That means we Colored People would have to compete for jobs like everybody else and that is just not right.

Perhaps the most racist point of all in the tea parties is their demand that government “stop raising our taxes.” That is outrageous! How will we Colored People ever get a wide screen TV in every room if non-coloreds get to keep what they earn? Totally racist! The tea party expects coloreds to be productive members of society?

Mr. Lincoln, you were the greatest racist ever. We had a great gig. Three squares, room and board, all our decisions made by the massa in the house. Please repeal the 13th and 14th Amendments and let us get back to where we belong.

Sincerely

Precious Ben Jealous, Tom’s Nephew National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Head Colored Person”
...
We could slice this so many ways... clearly, it is racist. I think it should be popularized, in fact, as an example of a piece of propaganda by a MAJOR "Tea Party" organizer. The "cotton" reference is clear enough - how tone deaf of him. He thinks he's being clever by saying that NAACP supporters are enslaving themselves no a "cotton plantation." Clearly, he is saying that Black people who oppose the right-wing agenda are lazy, socioeconomic leaches - the same stereotype that racists have proclaimed always. He's in the company of George Wallace and Strom Thurmond. And he IS the "Tea Party."

She was the most dignified in the conversation, she held her head up high and she didn't go off on his dumbass......she also used a Rachal Maddow tactic and let him dig his hole as deep as the grand canyon.

Bravo Tamron!!
