A member of a Kansas church challenging Nebraska's ban on flag mutilation will be allowed to protest outside an Omaha soldier's funeral.

State and local authorities consented to the demonstrations, so U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf canceled a Thursday afternoon hearing on a request for the protests.

The request was filed by Megan Phelps-Roper, a member of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which is known for protesting at soldiers' funerals. She asked permission to picket near a Jewish temple on Thursday morning and near the church where Pfc. Edwin Wood's funeral service will be held Saturday morning.

Phelps-Roper has filed a federal lawsuit against Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning over the flag law.

After all, if they have the right to desecrate the flag, then others have the right to desecrate a cross, right? And their predictably violent reaction to the treatment of a cross would be something that could be prosecuted.
