"There is only one Republican who can break through that firewall. And it is Jeb."

Simon Rosenberg is the most bullish of Democratic strategists. The former Clinton administration official and head of the young non-profit group NDN has been the chief proponent of the belief that Barack Obama's election produced the opportunity for a "30-to-40-year era of Democratic dominance." A specialist in the political habits of different demographic groups (specifically Hispanics), he insists that, absent a drastic makeover, the GOP risks cementing itself "as irrelevant to the 21st century."

Sagging poll numbers and policy setbacks have done little to dissuade these rosy prognostications. There's only one thing that makes Rosenberg nervous: another Bush.

"Jeb (Bush) is married to a Latina, is fluent in Spanish, speaks on Univision as a commentator, his Spanish is that good," Rosenberg said of the former Florida governor and brother to the 43rd president during a lunch at NDN headquarters last week. "And if you look at the electoral map in 2012, you have to assume that Obama is going to have a very hard time in holding North Carolina and Virginia. The industrial Midwest, where the auto decline has been huge, has weakened Obama's numbers... a great deal. So Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin become a bit more wobbly. So if you're Barack Obama, the firewall is the Latin belt from Florida to southwestern California. And there is only one Republican who can break through that firewall. And it is Jeb."

Such a sentiment, Rosenberg admits, carries a slight hint of hysteria. After all, there is a good chunk of the country that recoils at the idea of another pol with the Bush surname. But that chunk has begun narrowing. And even within Democratic circles, there is an emerging belief that in a Republican Party filled with base-pleasing dramatizers or bland conservatives, Jeb stands out.

"The vast majority of the voting public yearns for a non-Bush," said longtime Democratic strategist Donna Brazille. But, she added, "Jeb has the talent, the experience and the ability to rebuild the GOP's tent."

5. If Jeb jumped into the 2012 nom race he would make
what is already looming as a GOP blood bath all the more bloody, and he might lose.

I'm not sure there's any overwhelming case that Jeb wins in Iowa or New Hampshire. McCain whipped Dubya in New Hampshire and the Bushes have never been wildly loved in Iowa. South Carolina is also no sure thing for Jeb -- he'd have to out-crazy the crazies to tickle the fancy of crazy GOP primary voters there, and absent wins in IA and NH, the momentum might be lost anyway.

His best bet would be to wait for the primaries to muddy and bloody everybody else and then appear on a white horse as the Great Champion of the Party, "oh so earnestly willing to accept the nomination because the Party needs me...blah blah blah." They could hand it to him as their "savior," but if he runs he risks losing, big and early.

If Obama is no less popular than he is this afternoon, though, the practical rationale for Jeb Bush to gamble on a run for the presidency is not very convincing.

Edited on Fri Jul-16-10 09:22 AM by KingFlorez
His being married to a Latina and speaking Spanish isn't going to play well with those far-right conservatives that dominate primaries. And even if he did win the primary (which he would do by becoming more anti-immigrant), Obama would win the general, Jeb isn't anywhere near as articulate or intelligent as President Obama.

11. Don't discount Jeb since his signature is on the PNAC mission statement
It would be foolish to ignore the fact that Jeb is deeply embedded with the biggest power brokers in the Conservative movement and a huge pendulum swing to the right will erase the stench of his brother. We all know that the American people have an attention span of a gnat and are fairly easily bamboozled.

17. NOTHING is going to erase the stench of his brother.
We're living the stench of the Bush administration every day. Only the biggest idiot asshole know-nothing cretins on the planet . . . and the wealthy . . . would praise the Bewsh years as fruitful and prosperous.

Reality dictates otherwise.

18. Maybe for you, but I wouldn't overestimate the intelligence of the American people.
From the moment Dubya left office there have been people busily rewriting their version of the Bush administration and that version will be spoon fed to the Fox-a-trons who will eat it up.

15. I posted this in another thread about Chainsaw Carly Fiorina, and it fits this one:
America is going to collectively experience the consequences of being a battered slowwwwwwww learner.

If this country is that fucking stupid to even consider putting another goddamned Bush in the White House (or really, ANY Republican for that matter), then there is officially no reason to have any hope for humanity whatsoever.

How can anyone be such a lunatic as to even suggest it? Seriously.

23. Republicans nominated the wrong Bush in 2000.
Had Jeb been nominated I suspect things would be a lot different - he would have been a better President than either George and we would all have been better off. And there would have been no Dick Cheney as VP. Having said that, Obama is way better than any Bush.

you really need to do a little research on PNAC before you decide to continue this discussion. I suggest you start with their mission statement and take a look at the Conservative rouges gallery that signed their names to it.
