down here is the southern most tip of Texas, and statistics be damned when I came out of a building in Brownsville, I KNOW WHAT I SAW, the population here is upwards of 90 percent hispanic.

Clever!

19. Racism fits with their mindset but it's not the whole story
Edited on Fri Jul-16-10 08:50 AM by DirkGently
These are largely white, working and middle-class people, who have bought the notion that only unrestrained capitalism is "fair," and that they are threatened on all sides by people who are different from them. They have absorbed the notion that liberalism and progressive values come from dirty, drug-addled hippies out to sweep aside their perceived cultural dominance, to which they feel *deeply* entitled, and that they are all candidates to be rich CEOs, if only they can keep the freaks out of government.

I think it's similar dynamic to the one that actually led to the Civil War, which was more about slavery than they would like to admit, but which we should admit was deeper and broader than that as well. And I'm not talking about "state's rights," which after all is just code for "let us enforce the homogenous culture we imagine is our birthright." It's cultural war based on greed, fear, and suspicion of not just non-whites and non-Christians, but of intellectualism and progressivism writ large. These are our very own unga-bungas, dancing around America's tribal fires with their war clubs, demanding that we all submit to "their" America, by which they mean embracing all the old mantras and speaking all the old dogma, for no other reason than they believe it inures to their selfish benefit, and that any "change" is a threat to a set of privileges that doesn't even exist anymore, but which they are nevertheless terrified to do without.

Slave owners and their culture invented racism to justify an exploitation that worked for the the rich economically, and which the poor were persuaded helped them by ensuring a permanent underclass. Until we can get them to put down these fears and back away (or learn to fear the economic bosses who are in fact a threat to them) we will be dealing with this noxious American meme forever.

27. Some are...some aren't
I think some are racist, although I've seen clips of some tea partiers shooing off people with racist slogans (they should do that more if they want their movement to survive).

I think its a mixed bag in the tea party. Most are concerned about the economy, I'm guessing. Although I'm really waiting to see if the Republicans are held to account as tightly as they are wanting the Democrats held to account.

Is a bear Catholic?

Yes, most teabaggers are racists. Not all of them, but a high enough percentage that racism will ALWAYS be associated with their cause.

spread those pictures around, far and wide. The Teabaggers can bray all they want, but the proof is in the pictures. This is the Information Age; let's spread some information!

Switching to Geico could save you hundreds of dollars on your car insurance.
