Brief for 9 states backs Arizona immigration law

By DAVID RUNK, Associated Press Writer David Runk, Associated Press Writer – Thu Jul 15, 3:50 am ET
DETROIT – States have the authority to enforce immigration laws and protect their borders, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said Wednesday in a legal brief on behalf of nine states supporting Arizona's immigration law.

Cox, one of five Republicans running for Michigan governor, said Michigan is the lead state backing Arizona in federal court and is joined by Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands.

The Arizona law, set to take effect July 29, directs officers to question people about their immigration status during the enforcement of other laws such as traffic stops and if there's a reasonable suspicion they're in the U.S. illegally.

States do have the right to protect their citizens/borders --

they just don't have the right to racially/ethnically profile some of their citizens --

1. I think you will see Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas
follow suit. I have heard rumors that here in Maryland it is a wait, see and maybe as well. Can not substantiate the rumors though.

6. Interestingly, Texas is not likely to follow suit.
Too many Hispanic voters that the Texas GOP is reluctant to completely chase away.

3. One of our local GA 'Baggers running for state senate supports SB1070

Illegal Immigration

Enforce our immigration laws.

There are more illegal immigrants in Georgia than in Arizona. We have to deal with this issue.

We need to enforce the immigration laws we already have on the books. Until the Arizona law was passed, Georgia had immigration law that was among the toughest in the nation. But we don't enforce the law.

We need to enforce current illegal immigration laws in Georgia.

We must STOP giving out free healthcare, welfare and social services to illegal immigrants.

In addition to cutting government spending, we must START collecting taxes from immigrants, just like we do for law abiding citizens.

I fully support strong immigration laws AND the enforcement of those laws.

"I absolutely and vehemently oppose the federal government filing suit against Arizona over the AZ immigration law! Insanity. How can the federal government, which violates the US Constitution daily, file suit against the states and people which grant it limited power?" ~ Shane Coley

We took one of Coley's signs down from our yard yesterday. We think the property manager put it up. Here's another jewel from his twitter:

"We're not stupid, Georgia doesn't belong to our government, we don't work for them and we want our nation back!" ~ Shane Coley < / teabagger >

So according to Coley, GA is NOT part of the union?

The only Democratic challenger in this race doesn't even have a campaign website. And the primary is only 2 weeks away.

4. Reminds me of a soft form of
ethnic cleansing. The profiling will certainly effect people who are legal citizens simply because of their race. It is potentially a stepping-stone and it is being tolerated far too much. A problem with this sentiment, (for those who work in an already established, sub-economy) is that it can easily escalate into more xenophobia, scapegoating and persecution.

Given the overall climate of the country today, this is something to keep an eye on. How we treat anyone within our borders, (and outside them) reflects and demonstrates our actual value system despite the rhetoric, facades and denial.

Considering the stage we are at concerning a descent into overt Fascism, (or in regards to our inverse totalitarianism) it is upsetting to see support for what could turn out to be a, "First they came for ..." series of events.

Is this really the way to deal with the illegal immigration issue when businesses have benefited from it and encouraged it for so very long? When the Right supports it, something is very wrong with the picture.
