Repub Melissa Hart leaves Car in Congress Garage for 3 years after voted out-LOL Pic
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 10:51 AM by RamboLiberal
It's OK for former members to park/warehouse their wheels in the House garage — unless they become lobbyists.

Apparently, that's ex-Rep. Melissa Hart's car, unwashed in the Longworth garage, three years after she left office.

Problem: She's a registered lobbyist, the Daily Caller reports.

Hart’s “dude where’s my car” dilemma may not be her only problem, if the car is in fact hers. According to the Committee on House Administration Web site, former members can park in the garages only if they are not registered lobbyists. Hart, who now chairs Pittsburgh-based law firm Keevican Weiss Bauerle & Hirsch’s Government Relations practice, is registered in the Senate lobbyist database.

-----

Bumper stickers on the car point to Hart, as does the fact that the license plate is from Pennsylvania. There’s a sticker for Washington and Jefferson College (of which Hart is a 1984 graduate) on the back window. And there’s a George W. Bush for President sticker on the bumper.

Hart was voted out of office in 2006.

2. Even Dicky Mellon Scaife's paper rags her on this
If you're longing for yet another example of how screwed up our federal government is, look no further than to the case of Melissa Hart's junker.

Ms. Hart, the former congresswoman who represented Pennsylvania's 4th Congressional District, was defeated for re-election nearly four years ago. But her car, a Volkswagen Jetta, has remained in office, so to speak.

As was first reported many months ago, the car was left in the Longworth House Office Building parking garage. Incredibly, such nonsense is allowed. Former members are allowed to park or store their cars in House parking garages free of charge and indefinitely.

With one major exception: You can't be a lobbyist. And since March 2009, Melissa Hart has been just that. Confronted, Hart says she'll remove the junker and donate it to charity.

But Hart feels no compunction to reimburse taxpayers for warehousing her car since she violated the terms of her perpetual perk. At $290 per month — the value the House Administration Committee puts on the space for tax purposes — Hart owes taxpayers about $4,600. She should pay up.

5. Incredible, did she just think she misplaced it, or didn't she miss it.
How many of you could just forget about your car? Even a junker could get you a few hundred bucks.

6. When someone asks how a person can be too rich . . .
People for whom car ownership is an absolute necessity (job, kids, etc.) surely can’t quite grasp how someone could have so much as to neglect a perfectly serviceable car. I thought about the same thing during the 2004 debate, when George W. Bush expressed surprise that he owned a timber company (and his hackneyed joke asking the moderator if he needed some wood). It wasn’t so much that Bush owns or owned a timber company, probably for some sort of targeted tax break, but the fact that he didn’t even know it! I probably have some books or clothes lurking in boxes in the garage that I don’t recall still having, but to not know that you own a timber company?! That’s someone with too much money, especially in a country where citizens forego food or medical treatment on a regular basis.

10. "What other perks does congress get" is THE question of the day.
I am continually shocked to learn of new (to my knowledge) perks all the time (although at some point you would think I would learn and not be surprised).

12. Exactly!
That car was worth a few thousand bucks when it was parked. Could have been donated then, or sold to a dealer/car lot by phone (mail them the keys!) A private storage gararge or lot would have seized it for nonpayment years ago, and sold it.

8. Does it have current tabs on it?
If not, then it's illegal and should be towed. Contact the last owner and have that "owner" pay applicable storage and fines. Apparantly she can afford to pay the fines - she clearly doesn't need the car nor care about negative publicity.

I tried, but my eyes weren't good enough to read. Throw the book at her.

BTW, I think that means your neighbors are rich; more cars on blocks, more wealth where I come from.

9. Buy American!
Little late for former Congressperson Melissa Hart, but always a timely reminder for her lobbying targets.

13. ABC did a very funny video at the car last week & even call her
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/congresswoman-melissa-hart-confirms-filthy-jetta-illegally-parked/story?id=11091577

Hart admitted the car was a piece of junk that she used for short trips around Washington. When ABC News asked Hart if she felt any need to reimburse taxpayers for the spot, valued at around $200 a month, that has been illegally occupied by her Jetta since March of 2009 when she became a registered lobbyist, she said no. Hart protested she had planned to allow other people to use the car (and presumably the sweet parking place) but it never happened.

Hart says her new plan is to donate the car to charity. If she can get it started.
