Most of you aren''t old enough to remember this. Same this are being said today,
only the numbers are different!

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $10.00.

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $1,000.00 will only buy a used one.

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. 20 cents a pack is ridiculous.

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter!

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century... They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government.

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

'There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $15.00 a day in the hospital, it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 30 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

Unfortunately I DO remember people saying all those things. Heck, I rember when we were first married my grocery budget was under $10/wk and I had to cut back on our food budgt after we ad our fist baby because had to buy baby food too, and that was in the early 60's.

Really sad.
The party staffer in our area had some thrown at him the other night while door-knocking.

3. Well, at risk of giving away my age I do recall when gas was about 20c/gallon
One day my dad pulled into a gas station and told the attendant (pre-self serve days in Colorado) to put in ten dollars' worth. He quickly amended that to ten gallons and he and the attendant got a big laugh contemplating the day it would cost ten bucks to fill a tank. Neither could foresee that ever happening. That was about 1954. I could go on--23 cents for a loaf of bread, nickel for a candy bar, 16 cents for a movie ticket. I also remember my first job paying $110 a month. Ah, those were the days!

I'm sure you've prompted more to come. This is kinda fun. Be interesting to see today's catch phrases being called to mind in the future. If there is any future...

Blessings.

32. I remember buying gas for 5 gals/$1.
At that time I was 17 years old.

We bought a new house before we got married in 1966. Our 20 year mortgage monthly payment was $102.65.

My husband's new fully loaded FWD 1979 GMC Sierra Grande cost $7500.00. The monthly payment was $150.00.

When my son was born in 1968 our weekly grocery budget was $25.00 and we ate well.

I worked as a bookeeper for a heating oil company in 1967. Heating oil cost $.15 a gallon.

38. Ah yes! And I remember the pump jockeys who did that and more...
for instance, vacuumed the floors, smiling and saying, "That's why they call it a service station, ma'am." 'Course, that was to a couple of teenage girls, but I'm guessing it was their MO for young and old.

Thanks for the memory!

Well I certainly agree that most of us are too young to have had kids during the 'Gable said damn' era, seeing as that was about 70 years ago.

31. Well for those of us who can devote an entire garage to the
Cabinet and the machinery, home computers might be possible.

Though if it has 40 K of memory, it might take up two whole garages!

(I had friends who moved from San Francisco area to Los Angeles just because new employer had a machine with 60 K of memory!)

26. Yousay that now, but really, think about it, did you REALLY think
it was that great then? I was the OP here & although I was happy most of the time, I also remember thinking "I really don't want to be rich, just be able to buy what I really wanted at the grocery store and not worry about how I could pay for it.

Most of the postrs here that remember those times were depression babies and grew up being very careul with money.

I didn't post the article (which I got in an enail) because I tought it was a GREAT TIME! I posted it to show both the oldsters & the youngsters that nothing ever reall changes. The same arguments continue to exist, just the numbers and technology changes.

When Rush Limbaugh said it would bankrupt small businesses ...

AND ...

that nobody was working for minimum wage ...

go figure that one out ... if nobody was working for minimum wage, then how could raising the minimum wage mean anything to those who weren't working for that rate???

TEN INCH (diagbally measured) one! Dad bought it used from a friend of his who had an electroncs store, and on Friday nights we used to invite the relatives over to watch wrestling. Amazing that anyone could see anything from across the room on such a little screen.

There is no inflation though.

And of course computers are a passing fancy... and I still remember typing papers on a TYPE WRITER... talk about footnotes!

typewriter (the one with the little ball element & a CORRECTION TAPE!) an we all used to fight over who was going to get to use it instead of the standard royal electric ones. And remember CARBON PAPER? How much fun was THAT when you had to correct 3 or 4 copies when you made a typo!!!!

30. I might just do that
it is a great Olivetti... solid as can be, and for some writing it could be great.

Thanks for the tip.

That said, I downloaded a nice little progie that simulates the typewriter behavior. Problem is... file format. (Going geek), the UTF-8 encoding for text should be fine, but believe it or not word kind of chokes. (And yes I make a lot of mistakes so I do need to ahem... open it in a real word processor to correct for that)

If I find one that does not do that, my nettie will become one until I can carry that thing up here.

...considering at the time the top maginal rates were 70-90+ percent (depending on exactly when this is from).

Huge, seismic shifts in tax structure later, we still hear the same complaints. And they're still demanding more tax cuts for the rich and businesses.

At 51, I find it amusing and thought-provoking. But it sure as hell isn't in any way controversial.
