Rep. Nadler: Investigate torture or face road to ‘tyranny’

WASHINGTON – A New York Democrat argued that failing to prosecute former Bush administration officials complicit in the use of torture would create a dangerous precedent and place America on a path to "tyranny."

In an interview with Raw Story, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) invoked a "supremacy of laws" when critiquing President Barack Obama’s decision to "look forward and not backwards" on his predecessor’s abuses of power.

"Those who misuse government power to break the law and subject people to improper pressure or torture ought to be prosecuted," said Nader, chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. "That’s why we have laws."

................

"If you don’t prosecute, or if you don’t investigate, then what you’re saying is government can do anything," Nadler argued. "And that’s a formula for tyranny. So I think it’s very important." As for looking forward and not backwards? "By that standard you’d never prosecute any crime."

1. There is a Democrat I can support.
Those that believe we should do nothing, or look the other way, ARE complicit.

"By their works you will know them."

2. spot on Rep. Nadler
What the hell is this?
Laws are broken, people are tortured, illegal wars are started and millions are murdered.
Is it "professional courtesy" from one admin to another?
Listen up Mr. President....they will come after your ass with subpoenas and impeachment proceedings before the ink is even dry on the next election results.

Get a clue...the RePugs hate you...why don't you get it???

3. Unfortunately you kind of needed to be MOVING on that belief from Day One
Now it's just irrelevant shoulda, woulda, coulda. Although I was the first to recommend this story, on reflection I think it's probably just campaign season posturing from Nadler.

9. I'm in total agreement, Mr. Nadler
And if the Justice Department isn't doing its job, is there a congressional committee that could be doing some of the work-up, taking testimony, gathering evidence, and creating a record? As chairman of Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, it seems that some of this might come under Mr. Nadler's purview. Get the ball rolling, so to speak.

Fine words; could be finer action.

Just as many of us realized re the right wing political violence America has suffered

for decades --

Some have said that no one in America is powerful enough to bring the truth forth --

fine, let's go to truth hearings if we have to --
