Tulli Kupferberg co-founder of the Fugs died today
September 28, 1923 – July 12, 2010

He had just commented on a video I posted on Youtube last week adapted from the Fugs song "Wide Wide River," the last post on his Youtube channel.

RIP Tuli.

Tuli Kupferberg, a poet and singer who went from being a noted Beat to becoming, in his words, “the world’s oldest rock star” when he helped found the Fugs, the bawdy and politically pugnacious rock group, died on Monday in Manhattan. He was 86 and lived in Manhattan.

<snip>

The Fugs’ first album, “The Village Fugs Sing Ballads of Contemporary Protest, Points of View and General Dissatisfaction,” was released in 1965. The band became a staple of underground galleries and theaters, as well as antiwar rallies.

<snip>

With his bushy beard and wild hair, Mr. Kupferberg embodied the hippie aesthetic. But the term he preferred was bohemian, which to him signified a commitment to art as well as a rejection of restrictive bourgeois values, and as a scholar of the counterculture he traced the term back to an early use by students at the University of Paris. Among his books were “1,001 Ways to Live Without Working” — and for decades he was a frequent sight in Lower Manhattan, selling his cartoons on the street and serving as a grandfather figure for generations of nonconformists.

We've gone back and forth on The Fugs on a number of occasions. There goes another major piece of my misspent youth. RIP, Mr. K.

5. RIP Tuli...
He was really cool, and the Fugs were great! I saw them many times.

Last time I saw them was at the "Confront The Warmakers" protest at the Pentagon in Oct. 1967. They played through the tear gas.:hippie:

8. I spoke with Tuli maybe 20 years ago about his organization to find health
care for working artists, the Organization For The Community of Artists.
I told him I had stopped in to a theatre in the Village in the mid 1960's to see tha band, and that I was wearing loafers and a Penn State sweat shirt.
He said," Oh, yeah - I remember you!"

good bye man,I hope you had a great trip here and good luck in whatever is out there...don't take any shit from them, either!

14. Awwwwwww. My brother had a band in the 60s & they opened for the Fugs at City Center in NY. I can't
remember why I didn't go, but my parents did. Needless to say, they were just a little bit shocked!

:rofl:

Rest peacefully Tuli.
