How Russian consumer electronics manufacturers drove their Japanese competitors out of business
Edited on Mon Jul-12-10 08:17 PM by Boojatta
I don't know how they did it. Do you? Of course, in general terms it's easy to understand.

A political establishment founded on understanding economics couldn't fail to see the opportunities for world-wide export of consumer electronics devices. When it comes to winning approval from people for a political career, what generates admiration in Russia isn't performance that is profitable in the short term but ultimately meaningless, such as speculative currency trading. In Russia, engineers have for a long time been involved in politics.

However, I presume that superior engineering isn't the one and only key to explaining how Russian consumer electronics manufacturers drove their Japanese competitors out of business. What about harmony in factories? Since 1917, Russia has championed the rights of the workers, developing techniques for organizing strong unions that help workers be all they can be. What about the systems used to evaluate job applicants to avoid missing good applicants who don't look good on paper? What about the careful use of small advertising budgets? How about the various systems for quality control that make advertising a mere supplement to the free publicity from periodicals such as Consumer Reports? Why would anyone even bother to look at a Japanese product when "made in Russia" is synonymous with high quality?

2. ???
I'm having a hard time making heads or tails out of this post.

What is the point? Have Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic, Sharp, Sanyo, et al, all gone out of business? I must have been asleep when that news hit the media.

Or are Russian consumer electronics so much better than their Japanese equivalents?

Or maybe the currency exchange rate has given Russia an unfair advantage over Japan?

Russian ruble, pre-1991 Official exchange rate $1.29
Today's exchange rate .03

The value of the Russian ruble has DECREASED by a factor of 40 in dollar terms over what it was in 1990 (pre-breakup)

100 Japanese yen, 1990 78 cents
Today's exchange rate 1.13

The Japanese yen has INCREASED nearly 50% in dollar terms over what it was in 1991

Or, put in other terms, the value of the Japanese yen vis-a-vis the ruble is about 60 times higher today than it was in 1990.

9. So that's why we're not playing with Sony Playstations, but Volgastations instead.
And I just passed up those shitty Alpine Car Stereos for something called Dimitri's Garage instead.:eyes:
