"Breakup" over Tweety?
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 04:04 PM by Cyrano
My lady pal likes Chris Matthews.

I hate Chris Matthews.

Why anyone on this planet would have a fight over Chris Matthews is beyond me. But that's what happened. She wanted to watch him. I didn't. She thinks he says "meaningful" things. I think he says stupid things. She likes his interviews. I've never heard him let anyone get in more than two words before he cuts them off and launches off into his own opinions.

This "hopefully temporary" breakup was my fault. She was going on about how good he was and I blurted out: "How dumb can anyone be to think that Chris Matthews thinks before he talks? -- Or that he even thinks?"

Obviously, I was the one who didn't think before spouting off, and there was no way in the world I could pull back those words. And no matter how "right" I believe I was, so what? It doesn't fix what I broke.

On the other hand, it doesn't make me believe that Matthews is any less of an idiot. But getting into a "hopefully short-term" breakup over him???

I suppose that makes me a bigger idiot than him. Perhaps there's some kind of "Idiot of the Week" award for being dumber than Chris Matthews.

1. At least she's not watching Fox.
If you want her to send a tingle up your leg, just STFU about Tweety.

Fair enough!

HAH!

4. This made me laugh..... sorry!
But I can see how the whole scenario could happen!

Would have made for a good sitcom!

I do hope you can patch things up though! Take my advice though and don't give in to easily.

5. Oh dear.. Tweety is not a good reason to "break up"..
I am sure he would be devastated to hear that. Geez, let her watch him.. you can do something else while hes on. I like tweety sometimes too.. he's a smart guy but he's pressured to do alot of crap to keep his ratings up. Give your gal a break.

15. I disagree...
I think he'd want to know if she's "Hawt", and then he'd make lewd remarks about her in private...

She'll take you back...tell her you're learning how to lick your own eyebrows!

6. 2 things: Either learn to compromise or get a DVR
I go through this all the time with my SO--I like politics and reality shows. He likes cartoons (:eyes:). Most of the time I compromise and let him watch his goofy cartoons and I watch my shows later on the DVR.

I like Tweety too, btw. It's not that I think he has great insight or anything--I just like his delivery and passion, and he focuses on the silly/light aspects of politics too.

8. Sorry to hear about your situation.
Tact and respect are key in any relationship you want to keep. I have gotten into it with my wife on issues where she differs from me. It is hard to keep from escalating in order to prove a point, but you gotta ask yourself if the "victory" is worth it. Matthews is definitely an odd character. He's a blowhard and he likes the game more than the information. Occasionally something interesting happens despite his train wreck style. Hopefully you won't lose the relationship over this. My suggestion is to let her know that sometimes emotion gets in the way of rational thought. Acknowledge your part in the fight without expectation of reciprocation. You can only take ownership of your own behaviors, not the choices of others. Good luck with your situation.

21. Not necessarily.
I manage to get an apology from my wife now and again. Of course if I implied she was "dumb" for whatever reason I doubt that I would be getting anything less than a night on the couch. One of the defining characteristics of a mature person is knowing when your principles are not so much principles as preferences. As you stated simply in your OP. Breaking up over Chris Matthews? I mean if my wife ever thought that Rush Limbaugh was a great man and spoke the truth we would have some serious compatibility issues. :hi:

you being dumb for being over confidence and she being dumb for 1) listening to you and 2) not having her own mind.

10. Too bad you chose today to lose it -- Tweety's showing some great Obama
clips and has a couple of people I like, and on the whole he's being pretty mellow.

Like somebody else said, at least she doesn't watch Fox. Tweety's not worth losing a relationship. This is one of those "compromise" moments - which I fucking hate. Good luck!

11. Yes, "progressives" by and large show no interest in learning communication and listening skills.
They believe that vilification wins friends and influences people.

What you got from your "lady pal" over your rudeness and thoughtlessness is what is achieved at DU with the same kind of language, and is the same result with categorizing independent ("swing") voters in the same way.

There *is* such a thing as non-violent speech..... when will "progressives" decide it is important to learn an implement? How many losses like this will it take?

She doesn't give a shit about ANYTNING outside her own little world. I literally have no one except DU to talk to about current events, news, science, etc. But after 11 years, I'm too far invested to leave for that reason. We have come so close a few times to breaking up due to her apathy.

Tell her you were a dolt and ask her to forgive you. Then, be thankful you have a partner who is engaged and whom you can talk to, even if not about Tweety.

13. Next time suggest the re-run of the Daily Show instead.
You used the wrong language, but I know what you're saying. I can't stand Tweety. Never could. He never shuts up. Nobody can get a word in. And that HA!, is like fingernails going down a blackboard.

He's a one man McLaughlin Group.

14. I have an idea ...
First ... apologize for acting like a jerk, and explain that your issue is with Chris and not your "lady pal".

Second ... explain that Chris can at times act like a weather-vane, spinning with the political wind ... my examples are ... (1) His reaction to Bush landing on an aircraft carrier ("we are all neo-cons now") ... (2) his remarks about Fred Thompson and how you could almost smell the aqua-velva ... (3) when he said Obama's speech gave him a tingle up his leg, and then (4) when he said that a particular Obama speech made him almost forget Obama was African American.

He has also made statements in recent years that he was not a supporter of the Iraq war, which is not true.

Basically, Chris tends to blurt out crazy stuff.

Of course he also screams over his guests ... and found it necessary to add a segment called, "let me finish" which I find hilarious. But I would NOT mention that.

Bottom line: Explain that your issue is with Chris, that he is not consistent, and at times he appears to be willing to take new positions which seem to be based on what is currently politically popular.

That is potentially a rationale discussion that you and she could have.

20. don't know what to tell ya. But it's kinda weird
Had a dream last night and Tweety played a role. Old beau (long lost in real life) shows up all happy to see me and thinkin things were same ol as before. Only, Tweety was on and the old beau had a fit that I would be watching a 'lying liberal tool'.

Now, it wasn't just about Matthews, but I blew in the dream. Really tore into him about taking a powder after bein all values, loyalty 'n stuff.

And Tweety chirped on about the GOP not taking responsibility for any of the shit under bush II.

Weird. Old beau was not really political, but did favor GOP. We parted company in 1992, not long after election day and all that dancin I was doin while watching the returns.

re Matthews: personal opinion is he is a windsock, but sometimes hits nail on head. Have seldom seen him throw a hardball though. He is uneven in handling guests. Sometimes I wonder if his sugar level affect the show.

wasn't exactly being crazy. I thought his show tonight was good. I know what you mean by talking over people and that's just part of his personality, but he does do a very good job most of the time.

30. haha, you got me there. God I wish I was an informed genius
like Cyrano and realize that it's not the relationships with friends, family, and partners that are important in life, it's whether or not your friend, family member, or partner enjoys watching some show on TV that you don't like.
Gotta run, have to tell my loving and beautiful wife of 16 years "how dumb does someone have to be to enjoy watching the Ellen Degeneres show" Only because now I'm smart, like Cyrano

31. Solution!
You need to buy one of those Tweety Bird stuffed animals with a small card that says, "Sorry about that... If you'll just let your sweety hold Tweety during Chris Matthews, I'm sure the show will go on from now on... P.S. Don't blame him for what he does to me afterwards!"

If she doesn't laugh after that, then dump her ass.

32. People have fights over lots of stupid things
My very best friend and I had a huge blow-up over Stove Top stuffing once. She wanted to eat it for a snack and I wanted to save it for having with a roast chicken. I ended up moving out of our apartment over it and we didn't speak for weeks.

That was about 30 years ago and we still laugh about it. Hopefully you two will laugh over this.
