anarchists want to abolish the government because it oppresses the working class

libertarians want to abolish the government because it restrains and taxes the wealthy

Most libertarians I've encountered fall under four categories:

Denial-icans, Whiteys, Islands and Apostles. In that order.

All of them falling for the same hilarious Reaganite fairy-tale bullshit.

My aging mother, a Denial-ican, is about to remarry to a man who fits into all four categories.. Every time we talk about him I shake my head in shame as he's neither rich nor powerful, but claims to be both while demonizing anyone unlike him... classic libertarian

They are all share a really interesting quality: they are the type of people you are friends with via obligation or pity, and yet they go through life thinking they are doing you a favor.

I have been a bit over two decades on this earth. But I am getting the distinct impression that comic strip describes in one degree or another a significant chunk (if not the majority) of our population. I don't know if that is a new or old development, but it is frightening to me at least.

45. Think of him this way
Back when I was a kid, these folks would come through the neighborhood, rounding up children to take to an ice cream party (this was in a section of the nation that had yet to succumb to the fear that people are out to eat your kids). And of course our parents would let us go and we'd be all excited about it because hey ice cream!

And it was the crazy snake-shaker Baptists who would make us sit through an hour of telling us about hell. THEN we get the ice cream. That "Non-dairy frozen treat" stuff, or as I later came to call it, Soviet Sherbert.

Yeah, they offer ice cream... but they're still going to sell you their crazy first

28. I don't get the "left-wing" version
Its funny and I don't want to rain on the parade, but I've never heard of a left wing libertarian. Most lefties, myself included, want a government. A democratic government, ideally with publicly financed elections. A government that regulates things like Wall Street, Food, children's toys etc...helps build schools, roads, universal medicare etc..Because it makes sense to pool our resources to progress in the world.

I guess I can see why no one is listening to him, he doesn't make sense. I think he should be fused with the one in the last frame.

I encountered a few of them in 2000 working against Al Gore. They were clueless.

There are a few here that claim to have 'Libertarian leanings' and then some.

I guess i am naive, so be it. Libertarianism is not about left vs right..it's where you are on the statist/individualist spectrum. I believe we need government to do many of the things you mentioned, however it can be taken way too far.

35. The principle of 'left wing' libertarianism is distrust
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 12:27 PM by The Green Manalishi
Why should the government *OR* corporations (or armies) be trusted? People in large organizations are probably going to do more harm than good. I don't care for tha IRS, DEA, ATF *OR* Halliburton, BP or Exxon.

But I'm 'briefly tempting" except for believeing in the need for caring for the environment and regarding healthcare as something any civilization worthy of the name provides.

42. It's the anti-authoritarian left.
It's opposition to centralized power over society in either the government or private sector. It generally describes my ideology. I wouldn't call it libertarian because libertarians only talk about limiting government power.

It has been a dominant attitude throughout American history but doesn't have a consistent label. Populist? Anarchist? Radical? Libertarian socialist?

Conservatives know that most Americans are skeptical of centralized, bureaucratic authority. That's why they want people to think that liberal=big government. Meanwhile, they ignore that corporations are the far more powerful, obtrusive force in our lives.

Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 04:36 PM by okie
If I recall correctly, 19th century anti-capitalist anarchists (Proudhon, Mikhail Bakunin) were the first to describe themselves as libertarians. It was in the mid 20th century that the right adopted the term.

I am against letting big business run the world, support the putting in place of a QUALITY social welfare state, yet I think the state should not prevent grown adults from using whatever illegal drug they want, that the govt should not prevent people from gambling, that the govt. should not make consensual sex of any form between adults illegal and I also think that suicide should be legal. I vote communist, socialist, radical unionist and green here in France and green and democrat in the USA.
