Update LBN Story: FDA in talks with 8-year-old burn victim's family
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 12:22 PM by RamboLiberal
An 8-year-old burn victim and his family have their fingers crossed after speaking with U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials Monday concerning the boy's medical procedure with the Shriners Hospital for Children in Cincinnati.

Alfred Real of Stone Mountain was originally denied the "cultured skins" procedure due to issues concerning a 20-year clinical trial conducted by the hospital and the University of Cincinnati.

The procedure takes the healthy skin of a burn victim and regrows it in a Petri dish to be placed back on the body.

-----

Zac Real, Alfred's father, said when he spoke with officials Monday, "it seemed at the time they were going to reverse their decision."

"They were trying to describe some of the risks, and we were trying to describe to them how we trust the doctors," Real told the AJC Tuesday, adding his concern for the amount of infection Alfred is experiencing from open wounds.
