SLIDESHOW: Remembering Robert C. Byrd

That's Freshman Senator Byrd with Presdient Eisenhower, which puts things in a certain perspective. Some great ones in there.

11. Well I didn't see many really bad posts about Strom
and when cheney finally meets his due, they better not say anything about what people say about him. They trashed Kennedy terrible and then have the nerve to act so holier than thou. I say it now and I will say it forever this bunch of republicans in this country are the scum and scourge of the earth. This country would be 1000% better off with out any of them. I can't see a saving grace in any republican or their lesser counterparts the tea bags.

10. It makes one wonder what it is they want to accomplish...
Why on the day of his terminal hospitalization and then on the day of his death, there is such a merciless obsession to post the ugliest things imaginable. I do believe Byrd's flaws and unacceptable positions are being discussed, along with his very many good attributes and accomplishments. So, why do some feel the need for such vehement denunciation of his entire life--in total disregard of any good he might have done? Seriously...I would like to know what drives the need to do so and to do so today, specifically?

6. We have plenty of ugliness spewing here as well...
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 01:00 PM by hlthe2b
I wonder that some believe themselves to be so virtuous and to have lived such pure lives that they are free to excoriate a 92 year old man for the mistakes he made-- while choosing to disregard any evolution in his attitudes or mitigating good in his life--whatsoever.... Byrd evolved to changing times, changing societal norms, changing attitudes-- not always quickly enough but he tried. Obviously, his views on homosexuality were slow to change and we can certainly criticize him for that. That said, I can not ignore all else.

13. I'd like to think on the whole, we would be more respectful of Byrd--
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 01:32 PM by hlthe2b
flaws and all, than the RW blogs... Cheney has done nothing that I can see which mitigates the crimes and horror that is part of his well-deserved legacy. Surely no progressive or DUer would suggest that Byrd, no matter his failings, is on a par with Cheney?

15. I'm not saying that they are equal in misdeeds
but I'm just saying that there is grave dancing on BOTH sides whenever when anyone dies. To DU's credit, though, I do often see posters chastising other poster for it.

14. Well, when one has led such a blameless life oneself
In a survey of a career in public service spanning more than half a century is appropriate to pick out only the most self-serving, egregious moments and episodes and overlook everything else that kept returning a Senator to his seat time after time after time. We should be grateful for the sterling example set by everyone at Free Republic in how to live like not just a good American, but the best that America has to offer.

16. he is being trashes plenty right here at DU
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 02:10 PM by JitterbugPerfume
My dad died in 2004 at 96 and he had some of the same views as Byrd when he was a young man living in KY. He learned and grew to accept and even embrace things he had disdain for earlier in his life.
