3. actually...

New members can be confused by DU vocabulary which includes references to pop culture ("this thread needs more cowbell"), spelling that parodies other websites (such as "HUGH!", "series", and "cazy,") and famous images ("moran"), and long-running threads that have worked their way into DU lore ("dupe," "the kudzu thread").

Anything particular that you meant us to see?

On a quick glance, it seems pretty fair, I guess...

Not particularly up to date, actually.

18. It does seem a bit dated - but how on earth would you describe our
evolution in a linear way? I wouldn't even know where to begin. :hi:

22. Clearly it has been quite nonlinear..
Describing requires more hyperlinks for the tangential issues than Wiki would likely allow.

Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 12:49 PM by hedgehog
One long time poster had an avatar of a duck duct taped to a wall, leading other members to cry " Free the Duck!" Maybe someone better skilled than me can post a picture of the duck.

While trying to bite through the duct tape,
he might have gnawed the duck a little
accidentally.

9. I disagree with the very first paragraph.

The sentence ...

"DU was established on January 20, 2001, the day conservative Republican George W. Bush was inaugurated President."

In all truthfulness it shoud read ...

"DU was established on January 20, 2001, the day the criminal Republican George W. Bush made the theft of the Presidential election official."

13. Looks like there was
some discussion about that Wiki article in May of this year. Someone wanted to add a bit about DU being criticised from the left. Doesn't appear that it has gone anywhere though.

You can learn about the history of the article on the discussion tab.

15. I did not know that only members who donate can post in the...
DU "Groups" section.

I REALLY liked (and laughed) at this part:

Bulletproof
The apparent ability of some members to flagrantly violate DU rules without punishment.

Tombstoned
To be banned from posting.

Repug/Rethug
Short for "Repugnican" or "Rethuglican". Both are pejorative neologisms for Republican.

Freeper
A term specifically for a member of the Free Republic website. Sometimes turned into the pejorative "FreepTard".

Kick
To post to a thread to send it to the top of the forum.

Gungeon
The Guns Discussion board under Topic Forums. From "Gun Dungeon".

The Research Forum includes a "DU Glossary".
When a new user posts a message, the message header shows the total number of posts that user has made. At the 1,000 post mark the total number of posts are no longer shown in the message header. The total number of posts a user has made can be found in his or her profile. Some prolific members have written many thousands of posts.

"Some prolific members have written many thousands of posts".

Wow, I didn't know we had people like that on here!

27. REALLY?
"The site has come under criticism for failing to acknowledge that some regular posters are actually paid employees of the Democratic National Committee and White House as part of their effort to energize the netroots."

i notice there is no reference link to that one. who put that on wiki?

31. Next time you see something like that, fix it!
You don't have to be a longtime Wikipedian. You don't even have to have a registered account. Just click on the Edit link -- which is found in four different locations on the page, because Wikipedia is damn serious about making it easy for anyone to fix a mistake. It's even an official guideline on Wikipedia:

Of course, your pointing it out here was useful, because you called the passage to my attention and I've fixed it, but you can just dive in yourself. In general, I wish more DUers would take some of the really great information they post here and add it to the appropriate Wikipedia article, where it will be seen by many more people.

BTW, the Wikipedia articles about DU and about FR have long attracted this kind of attack. Of more than 3.3 million articles on Wikipedia, fewer than 1,000 are on article probation because of such editing, and those two made the list. Probation means that the project will have less tolerance for disruptive edits made to those articles.
