George Will Thinks Unemployment Benefits Aren't Stimulative
George Will apparently doesn't think that those receiving unemployment benefits spend their checks because he claims that another extension would not stimulate the economy. Another typical mean spirited Republican basically telling unemployed Americans "let them eat cake". I'm sure George thinks that once you cut those benefits off all of those lazy unemployed people will finally have to get off of their butts and magically find those non-existent jobs out there that they weren't looking for before instead of living high off the hog from the riches they were receiving with those massive unemployment checks. Heaven forbid we can't have anyone sucking off of that government teat when we've got those tax cuts for the rich we've got to keep in place and those wars to pay for.

I assume George won't have to worry about actually being around any of those tiresome whiners from his perch at his $1.9 million mansion in Chevy Chase, Md. since they probably keep that type of riff-raff out of his neighborhood.

And Rajiv Chandrasekaran nonsense about who's playing politics with this is almost as bad. Other than Ben Nelson it's not the Democrats blocking unemployment benefits. If the Republicans get whacked with this in November, they deserve it.

1. That's a core principle of their religion.
Any public money to the people goes in a black hole. Fraudulent on its face.

2. He's completely wrong.

14. I guess it started with Reagan's diatribe about trees and pollution,
his bullshit story about welfare mothers, and a steady stream of off-the-cuff pseudo facts after that which the media never took him to task about

15. It's really tragic that the consumers of this crap excuse for 'news'
don't open their eyes and think for themselves. How can they not be ashamed after being fooled by such shameless lies time after time? How can they not have caught on, still?

3. They probably aren't...
...but that doesn't mean that the aren't needed (or that removing unemployment benefits doesn't act counter-stimulus

5. Unemployment benefits are very stimulative.
This kind of money is not the kind of money that will be hoarded (which you don't want in stimulus, which is why the bailouts didn't work very well. When people get unemployment benefits, they're in some financial stress - falling behind on bills & such, so they spend the money immediately, causing it to circulate through the economy.

Food stamps, unemployment benefits and similar programs are among the best bang-for-the-buck ways to spend government money to stimulate the economy.

8. Tell that to my friend
who attempted suicide after his car was repo-ed and he got a foreclosure notice he had already gotten his last unemployment check he would have used his extension to buy food and pay past due house payments

10. George Will is partly right but mostly wrong.
The question is, how should we best invest our money for future growth? During the past 10 years, Republicans haven't been investing our money any better. Tax cuts to big companies so that they can offshore our jobs is the worst investment this country ever made.

On the other hand, investing in our people so that they can survive the Bush depression may be a very good investment. They'll have a home to go to when they (or their great-grandchildren) get off work when the economy does improve (in 2130).
