Oil in the Gulf will become the norm, the status quo.
The general public who is not yet smelling or seeing the oil will become desensitized to the news about it. It will become "that terrible oil leak", while many out there will switch the channel to get the latest news on the latest extra-marital affair or a celebrity in rehab.

Kind of like Katrina just faded away from the news, while things still are not fixed.

Because that is what many in this nation have become. As long as it is not interrupting their dinner yet...fuck it.

So, if you remain concerned about the Gulf, consider yourself lucky that you have not yet become a dumb fuck.

Please make sure your friends and relatives know what is going on in the Gulf...always.

1. Why should it be any different than

9/11?

We sure forgot about that. Well, most of us did.

3. Hence the qualifier: 'Well, most of us did.'
I haven't forgotten either. But most people who were not directly affected have forgotten 9/11 except for maybe on the anniversary.

And, eventually, most people who are not directly affected will forget about the GoM.

5. Millions of people on the Gulf coasts are not forgetting ever
You're confusing the people with the media. For example, I'm not forgetting about the Haiti earthquake but the media has definitely moved on.

10. already some are saying that the Gulf has always been oily
reducing the impact and import of the gusher and more or less exculpating BP and The Great One from most of their responisibility for cleanup
