"Taxation Equals Slavery"
I am sitting in one of the America Speaks town hall meetings today. They are being held all over the country to give people a chance to discuss the economy and Social Security in particular.

As I look around the room I see about 100 people and many I know to be good Democrats or active in the local progressive movement. Looks like we packed the meeting. Hooray!!

So as I'm scanning the room I see a guy who's probably in his late 60s or early 70s and he has a t-shirt on that says "Taxation Equals Slavery"

So if I get the chance I'll ask him when he stopped cashing his Social Security check and when he refused to enroll in Medicare.

There were protesters out front when I got here. I took pictures and will post them later.

2. He MISSED something, in the quote:
Edited on Sat Jun-26-10 11:28 AM by elleng
Taxation WITHOUT REPRESENTATION Equals Slavery, as in the District of Columbia, STILL with no voting representative in Congress!

Current population approx 599,657.

6. Yep, you beat me to it. But for those who have reps who only serve corporate
interests, they also have no representation (my rep is Alan Grayson, so I do, in fact, have representation).

3. That's been a right-wing slogan for YEARS
Colorado State Senator Charlie Duke used to say "High Taxation is a form of Slavery" two decades ago all the time.

4. I hope you do ask him
those things.
I think the only people who could say taxation is slavery are the hyper-wealthy who have not been taxed enough.
The people who go out to these protests and speak on behalf of the interests of those so much wealthier than them are nothing more than a manufactured mob.

7. That shirt makes me think he is a useful idiot for the
corporate giants. They are funding the tea party and other libertarian fronts. Less taxes mean weaker government. Weaker government means more power for the multinationals.

9. We need to expose the corporate funding of the Tea Party
and that the call to shrink/weaken government is precisely what the multinationals want. Weak government = more corporate control.

12. Working on it.
Meanwhile a tea partier here registered as a Democrat to run for state legislature against an incumbent Democrat. So they are not only corporate funded they are also playing dirty pool.

I have several friends who were there all day. I need to talk to them and find out what happened after I left. I'll let you know.

24. The Funny Thing Is, Ma'am, In Antiquity, Paying Taxes Was The Mark Of the Free Citizen
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 04:16 PM by The Magistrate
People who did not pay taxes were someone's property, either as chattel slaves or in some familial relation.
