No moratorium on offshore drilling?
Fine. We don't need it.

Get new, real inspectors on the rigs and go over every last detail of the permits with a fine toothed comb.

Any inaccuracies, omissions or inconsistencies - so much as an uncrossed 't' or an undotted 'i' - and we shut the fucker down.

Revoke the permits one by one if necessary. Lying or providing false and/or fictitious information and responses to influence the decision of a federal agency is a CRIME and cancellation of the permit is a clear remedy.

The monkey business at the Minerals Management Service doesn't excuse the state of those licenses that were issued outside of the legal requirements.

The famed Caribbean walrus ALONE is grounds for yanking the permits. There are tons of examples.

Is Secretary Salazar serious about stopping offshore drilling in the gulf? The authority is sitting in his lap.

2. Shouldn't he have had to recuse himself due to this obvious conflict of interest?
Hello? Judicial ethics?

3. One would think, but he didn't. I wonder who could punish him.
He so needs to be.

4. It's insane.
INSANE!

*** Personal story ***

My mother has a felony conviction for "lying" on a food stamp application. It was the early eighties and she was suddenly single and working as a "Kelly Girl" (temporary clerical services, in case you don't remember that outfit). Her hours varied and she reported the lower amount she earned.

YEARS later, they audited the records and discovered they had overpaid her. She was charged with a CRIME, tried and convicted in absentia because she had moved and not received the overpayment notice.

When it's an ordinary citizens down on their luck, the government has the resources to prosecute over a few pounds of welfare cheese (it was actually a few hundred dollars).

Nobody seems to remember the rules when a multi-billion dollar corporation makes a "mistake".

It's INSANE!

7. Tell that to the 11 dead workers on the Deepwater Horizon.
OH, that's right. You can't. They're dead.

I'm sure if they were given the choice today, they'd choose their irreplaceable lives over their replaceable jobs.

There's only one Earth, baby.

A few thousand employees can be supported in any number of ways. The damage of another spill can be irreversible.

Shut the drilling rigs down until they can be made safe!
