http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=engOperators at Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick Generating Station manually shut down Unit 1 at 8:54 p.m. Wednesday following the loss of both of the reactor’s recirculation pumps after an “electrical fault,” according to a plant spokesman. According to Joseph Szafran, site spokesman, the plant responded safely and without incident after “transformers tripped internal to the plant.” When power is lost to those recirculation pumps, which send water back through the reactor, the unit must be shut down, Szafran said. He said there is no risk to the public and there were no injuries associated with the shutdown. Crews are currently working to restore Unit 1. Szafran could not say when the reactor would be back online, however. Limerick Unit 2 continues to operate at full power. With both units at full power, the site can produce enough carbon-free electricity for 2 million homes. Exelon Corp. distributes electricity to approximately 5.4 million customers in northern Illinois and southeastern Pennsylvania and natural gas to approximately 486,000 customers in the Philadelphia area. Exelon is headquartered in Chicago.
