Oil enters Mississippi Sound

OIL ENTERS SOUND
Boats try to contain oil as it approaches Horn and Ship islands
By GEOFF PENDER - glpender@sunherald.com

BILOXI — Boats were trying Wednesday to contain and skim oil inside the Mississippi Sound from the BP disaster — one a patch a mile long and a couple hundred yards wide, and another south of Petit Bois Island near the Alabama line.

“The unified command task force is on site, skimming and pulling boom,” state Department of Marine Resources Director Bill Walker said. “It should be handle-able, but what bothers me is that we didn’t know about it while it was still way outside the islands. This is the second or third time we’ve been surprised by material that got too close.”

The larger patch came through Dog Keys Pass and was about a mile inside Horn and Ship islands, Walker said Wednesday afternoon.

Weeks ago, after a small patch of oil hit Petit Bois Island, Gov. Haley Barbour, Walker and others called for more boats to be patrolling south of Mississippi waters so the oil could be spotted and dealt with before it got close to islands or into the Sound. The number of boats patrolling quickly went from just a few to more than 400, and helicopters and airplanes are making regular surveillance flights.

“But that’s a lot of area, and some of these things can be difficult to spot,” Walker said. “We sent a fixed-wing plane out of Gulfport today, and they knew the coordinates for it but still had trouble finding it.”

4. "We apologize" - Republicons
"We are soooo sorry that YOU PEOPLE just don't get it, that this is completely natural (smirk) and nothing to, um, worry about, and so please stop being mean to our beloved oil cronies at BP."

- Republicons

8. So are we supposed to be happy about this because
it makes a Republican look bad? Judging by the comments that's the way it looks. I'm confused.

9. It's a teeth-grinding kind of thing
Edited on Sat Jun-26-10 06:33 AM by SpiralHawk
The Republicon stupidity, obstinancy, and general corporate butt kissing, groveling and apologizing while opposing America and American interests, has created in most honorable citizens a teeth-grinding state of apoplectic wonder.

Thus when the inevitable comes to pass -- as is the case with Mississippi and Haley Barbour (R - Frat Boy, Chickenhawk, of course), there is a perverse elation that comes to some. It has nothing at all to do with the real damage being done to the natural world and people's lives. It has to do with the classic "I told you so, you big fat arrogant idiot, but you wouldn't listen' kind of psychic release.

I don't endorse that stance, but it is understandable as human nature.

10. It will get worse before it gets better. Every day, I smell the stench of the oil further south.
It was only a matter of time before oil entered the Mississippi Sound.
