Tonight on Countdown
Moderate Republicans gave President Bush a blunt warning on his Iraq policy at a private White House meeting this week, telling the president that conditions needed to improve markedly by fall or more Republicans would desert him on the war. The White House session demonstrated the grave unease many Republicans are feeling about the war, even as they continue to stand with the president against Democratic efforts to force a withdrawal of forces through a spending measure that has been a flash point for weeks. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/10/washington/10cong.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

President Bush, under growing political pressure, agreed Thursday to negotiate with Congress on a war-spending bill that sets benchmarks for progress in Iraq. The turnabout in Bush's position came as Republicans expressed anxieties about the war and the House was expected to pass legislation that would cut off funding for U.S. troops as early as July. Bush said he would veto the measure. "We reject that idea. It won't work," the president said, speaking to reporters at the Pentagon after a briefing on Iraq and Afghanistan. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18588526/

Three retired generals challenged a dozen members of Congress in a new ad campaign Wednesday, saying the politicians can't expect to win re-election if they support President Bush's policies in Iraq. "I am outraged, as are the majority of Americans. I'm a lifelong Republican, but it's past time for change," retired Maj. Gen. John Batiste told reporters. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18580180/

Democrats pressed for more answers on the firings of U.S. attorneys Thursday even as Attorney General Alberto Gonzales insisted he hasn't remembered any new details. Republicans demanded that the investigation be closed. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18588523/

Last night, a Palestinian minister appeared to answer a torrent of outrage when he announced the suspension of a children's television show starring a Mickey Mouse clone who spouts Islamist slogans. Today, there are signs that it might not be so simple. http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/05/10/hamas-fatah-and-mickey-mouse/
