Candidate Won't Apologize For Fake Soldier In Mailer

The race to be Georgia’s next secretary of state took an unusual turn Wednesday when one candidate questioned a political mailer.

Incumbent Secretary of State Brian Kemp accused his Republican challenger, Doug MacGinnitie, of lying in a mailer that draws attention to Georgia's military members who must vote while overseas.

MacGinnitie told Channel 2’s Lori Geary he stands by his mailer. It displayed a picture of the Purple Heart award and the story of Captain Basnett, who was denied his right to vote when he was rushed to Walter Reed Army Medical Center while his ballot was stuck in Afghanistan.

However, MacGinnitie admitted to Geary that Captain Basnett didn't exist and the story was hypothetical. “My opponent is making a political attack over it, I think it's disheartening,” said MacGinnitie. “We just thought it would be more instructive and easier for people to follow if it was a generic example,” MacGinnitie told Geary.
