Is McChrystal still in the military?
I can't find it anywhere. Can he be relieved of command but stay in the service, or has he been discharged?

He'll resign voluntarily.

4. Yes,
he's still in the military, at least for the moment. One can be relieved of command and still remain on active duty; however, one's "career" is in the crapper.

6. I was just wondering because it wasn't clearly stated but
an officer can resign his commission and leave the military. Now he can also resign his job and stay in. It appears he resigned his commission after being relieved of his command.

Keep McC from undermining the president further.

But he won't.

11. Yes he is still in the service
and if he chose to stay, he is going to be sent so deep in the Pentagon, where they hide the children who misbehave it isn't even funny. In other words, he will be strongly encouraged to file retirement papers. His career is over.

13. I disagree,
they should require he stay in the windowless office in the Pentagon, it keeps him quiet.

15. They can't prevent him from filing retirement papers
if he files, it will be accepted. This is the way to save face all around in the modern US Military...

17. They can deny it,
and they should.

McChrystal did this deliberately to get fired, they should marginalize him, not empower him.

18. He didn't do this to get fired
to say that is disingenuous. And you are going to stop loss a man who is now a lose cannon... sure you are...

26. Yes and he did not do that to get fired
he did that because of REALLY POOR JUDGMENT, as well as leadership.

Here is a hint... this man has been somewhat of a pirate since his days at Point. He's been pushing on the edges since those days. Why he excelled in Special Forces, and why MOST Special Forces Commanders cannot expect to get more than two stars.

Now this reflects something that you are not willing to say. This is an underlying thread in the Military, at certain levels. There's always THAT tension between the civilian leadership and the military. But if you think he did that to get fired... you really do not understand the military. I am sure he knew what was coming once the chips started to fall. He knew his career was over. But no, he did not do this to get fired... he actually was quite candid as to his opinions. This won't happen again, by the way, and since this is not WW II... his career is over... see Patton and why I said this.

19. No
Too many generals covet that fourth star. If he retires, it is available. If he is "stop-lossed" there is no vacancy.

McChrystal retires:

three star makes four star
two star makes three star
one star makes two star
colonel becomes one star

Congress mandates the number of general officer spaces.

28. You need a Court Martial to demote an officer
let alone a GENERAL OFFICER.

You never served, did you? Jesus age, this is not a movie!

29. Even a court martial
With what charges you could create from the RS article (for McChrystal, not his staff), I doubt it would get to a general court martial. If it did (and the court knowing he would retire) the result might be a $10,000 fine.
