Google, DU, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Most DUers don't know that Google spiders DU almost continuously, and treats OP titles here with high priority for general Google searches. What does that mean? It means that if you compose an OP here on Google, the title you give that OP can lead Google searchers worldwide to your post.

So, the more you think about your OP's title, and the more care you take in composing that title, the more influence you can have in getting a broader audience than just DU to see and read your thoughts. It also helps bring new people to DU when they're researching topics on the internet.

Typically, a DU post will be added to the Google database within an hour of posting. That means that, within an hour, Google searches that match phrases in your OP will display your post, high in the list of search results. Google gives high priority in its rankings to DU, due to its high traffic. Most often, a well-worded OP title will show up on the first page of results, and will stay there for at least 24 hours. It will then move down in the rankings as other, more recent, uses of that phrase crop up.

If you care about visibility for your posts, think carefully about your OP titles. Include search phrases that are likely to be entered by Google searchers. How would you search? That's a good start.

I do SEO as part of my web content business, and DU is remarkable in its priority in Google's ranking algorithms. If you're looking for wide exposure for your point of view, think carefully about your OP titles.

Want an example? I wrote a satirical post about "Message Disciple," an hour or so ago. Search Google for that phrase. The thread is on the first page of the results. That's how fast it works, and how high a priority DU threads get.

It's worth thinking about. You can reach a large audience quickly if you pay attention to your titles.

5. "Search Google for that phrase"
But be careful, as there is a cost. Some disputed reports attached 7g of CO2 per each Google search (half that of boiling a pot of water). And we have no idea how much lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, etc, was released into the environment during the production required to build Google's data centers.

14. Also worth remembering in the context of privacy
DU is home for so many of us that we sometimes forget how visible it really is, especially wrt Google.

18. True. And it's not just here. If you use an uncommon screen name,
Google will find your posts here and elsewhere in an instant. There is no anonymity on the Internet. Anyone can run my screen name right back to my website and find out exactly who I am. I know that, and don't care, but others might be more concerned.

If you post on several forums using the same screenname, and have ever mentioned more than that or have a profile somewhere with your email address or other information, you have virtually no anonymity at all. Most people are shocked at how easily a search can turn up their RL identity. It can be frightening if you think you're anonymous.

If you know that you're not, then it's just another thing. I know I'm not, and I don't care. I even have my own website in my profile here. Doesn't matter, really.
