I'm not surprised. That's what happens when you select a right-wing Republican hawk to run a war. So when will George W. Bush's Secretary of Defense, Gates, publicly break with President Obama when it becomes obvious the Afghan war isn't being won?

I can see the two of them now, McChrystal and Gates tag teaming on Obama and other "White House wimps" for "losing to terrorists" in the "winnable" Afghanistan war.

McChrystal or Gates might go for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. McChrystal playing the General Douglas McCarthur role and Gates more Dwight Eisenhower like.

That's what happens when you select conservative Republicans to run the military in a Democratic administration.

1. I guess anything is possible at this point. Who does the GOP have otherwise?
Sarah Palin? The majority has said she isn't qualified to be much more than she is now, so she doesn't stand a chance of winning an election.

Mitt Romney? He's been pretty quiet lately for someone who would want to keep their name in the public realm.

Newt Gingrich? The adulterer? The hypocrite? I can't imagine the GOP trotting him out front, but it might be fun to watch them try.

Rick Santorum? Really? Mr. Man on Dog? (He dreams of this stuff.)

Really, there's just no one with much of a chance. Pawlenty, etc., just don't have the charisma to make any headway.

So, having two (former) military men to choose from might be the GOP's best choice. They do love wars.

6. Being forced to resign is not exactly a qualification for President of
the U.S.

When rank and file RWers fear outloud every now and then
the take over of our country and the use of Military
to do it???? I hope the GOP Leadership is smarter than this.

There is a world of difference between nationalism and having
the Military take over the Government.

3. Gates appears to be doing his job. McChrystal has clearly gone rogue
At least that's how I've seen it so far. They will probably try to run Petraeus or McChrystal. Or put them on the same ticket.

4. Petraeus is a possibility. Has he publicly criticized Obama on the war yet?

If so, I missed it.

8. Bush fired his generals maybe as one poster
said demote his butt, don't accept his resignation and put him in a lowly position where he can't boss anybody around. I guess the republicans got to him to try to embarass Obama's administration further. I just want to say if Afgan was "winnable" how come Bush didn't have us out of there before he left office.

9. I find it odd...

that McChrystal made sure to mention that he voted for Obama. As if that gives "weight" to what he says. I was under the impression that military people weren't allowed to talk about such things while they are active.

Don't know why, it just doesn't sit right with me. :eyes:

10. New Afghanistan Commander, General McChrystal was Cheney's Chief Assassin. Repost from 5/16/2009
New Afghanistan Commander, General McChrystal was Cheney's Chief Assassin.
Sat May-16-09 08:46 PM by Better Believe It

Richard Cheney on the appointment Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal to command American troops in Afghanistan:

"The decision to send Stan McChrystal...is a good one," Cheney told Cavuto. "I think the choice is excellent. I think you'd be hard put to find anyone better than Stan McChrystal."

McChrystal was Cheney's chief assassin

Seymour Hersh says that Dick Cheney headed a secret assassination wing and the head of the wing has just been named as the new commander in Afghanistan.

In an interview with GulfNews on May 12, 2009 Pulitzer prize-winning American investigative journalist, Seymour Hersh, said that there is a special unit called the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) that does high-value targeting of men that are known to be involved in anti-American activities, or are believed to be planning such activities.

According to Hersh, the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) was headed by former US vice president Dick Cheney and the former head of JSOC, Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal who has just been named the new commander in charge of the war in Afghanistan.

On July 22, 2006, Human Rights Watch issued a report titled "No blood, no foul" about American torture practices at three facilities in Iraq. One of them was Camp Nama, which was operated by the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), under the direction of then Major General Stanley McChrystal.

An interrogator at Camp Nama known as Jeff described locking prisoners in shipping containers for 24 hours at a time in extreme heat; exposing them to extreme cold with periodic soaking in cold water; bombardment with bright lights and loud music; sleep deprivation; and severe beatings.

When he and other interrogators went to the colonel in charge and expressed concern that this kind of treatment was not legal, and that they might be investigated by the military's Criminal Investigation Division or the International Committee of the Red Cross, the colonel told them he had "this directly from General McChrystal and the Pentagon that there's no way that the Red Cross could get in."

"And if he decides to go beyond that? A confrontation with the White House would be all but inevitable. Unless President Obama lets him slide and he really can't do that if he wants to survive."
