Cornhole tournament to benefit wounded veterans

The organization is starting small, but its name - We Are American - is grand. And its ambitions are grander.

Raising $5,000 through a "Summer Classic Cornhole Tournament" to benefit wounded veterans is the immediate goal. But eventually, the group hopes to link civic-minded people with worthy projects, and one another, nationwide.

"We'd love to see it catch on," says Ed Secrest, one of the founding parents of We Are American, along with his wife, Michele, and their friends Pete and Lisa McKeon.

About 16 people, mostly family members and friends, are active in the three-month-old organization. Their mix of idealism, hard work, and can-do spirit is impressive and, well, quintessentially American.

"When we were younger, it wasn't that big of an effort to say hey to your neighbor," says Michele, 39. "People don't know their neighbors any more."

5. I first heard the term 'cornhole' used in this manner a couple of years ago,
and I was flabbergasted! I had no idea that it referred to what we used to call Bean Bag Toss. That's most definitely NOT what I thought the term meant.

9. Honestly, this seems like something DU could use to make the forums act more neighborly
We could go around offering each other "virtual cornholes".

Miss Bunny, may I be the first in offering you a nice neighborly cornhole toss?

7. Great idea! If you really want to know your neighbors, playing "cornhole" with them will get it done
Of course it's only polite to respect the wishes of those neighbors who don't want to cornhole.

Given the game's apparent marketing success, I think your opinion is in an operative minority.

23. Oh, my.
I really didn't know that this was the legitimate name of a game.

The terminology only makes it worse:

The following is a list of terms commonly used in a cornhole game:

Ace or cow pie
A bag lands on the board, which is worth one point.<3><4>

Back door
A cornhole that goes over the top of a blocker and into the hole.<3><4>

Backstop
A bag that lands past the cornhole but remains on the board creating a backboard for a slider to knock into without going off the board.<3>

Chances Double
Players call out "Chances double," when an opposing player achieves a cornhole, alluding to the impression that the next player often throws a cornhole in response to the challenge. "Chances Double" is a form of Gambler's fallacy

Cornfusion
When players or teams cannot agree on the scoring of a given inning.<3>

Blocker
An ace that lands in front of the hole, essentially blocking the hole from sliders.<3><4>

Cornhole or Drāno
A bag falls in the hole, which is worth three points.<3> The alternative name is a reference to a trademark, that of a sink clog clearing product.

Dirty bag
A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.<4>

Galbraith
When a player makes all four bags into the hole during his or her turn. Can also be deemed in fractions : quarter Galbraith, half Galbraith, and three quarter Galbraith.

Gusher or double deuce or Catorce
Four cornholes by a single player in a single round.<3>

Hanger or Shook
An ace on the lip of the hole ready to drop.<3><4>

Honors
The team who tosses first, resulting from the team scoring last.<4>

Hooker
A bag hitting the board and hooking or curving around a blocker and going in the hole.<3>

Jumper
A bag that strikes another bag on the board causing it to jump up into the cornhole.<3>

Leprechaun
When a player attains all four bags onto the board without getting any into the hole.<3>

Police
The cornhole referee.<3>

Power Wash
A round in which all four bags from each opposing player land on the board, causing the round score to be zero, a wash.

Sally or corn patty
A toss that is thrown too weakly and lands on the ground before reaching the board.<3>

Shucker
When a player pitches a bag and it strikes an opposing players bag knocking it off the board.<3>

Skunk or whitewash
A game that, by some rules, ends in an 11-0 score.<3><4>

Slider
A cornhole that slides into the hole.<3><4>

Swish
A bag that goes directly in the hole without touching the board.<4> Sometimes this is also referred to as "air-mail".

Wash
When the scores of a single round amount to zero, the round is called a wash.

25. !!
"For students of American slang startled by the notion of a cornhole "tournament," be advised we're talking here about an old-fashioned game resembling beanbag toss or horseshoes. Having caught on in recent years, cornhole now has its own gear, vendors, and a national association."

And some players are starting to hit the bigtime with major endorsement deals from companies such as Astroglide and K-Y brand.
