29. Not all Southern Rock...
Lynyrd Skynyrd has been riding the redneck fanbase for years and Charlie Daniels is trying to deny his hippie past, but Drive-By Truckers make some really strong anti-racism, pro-South songs. Their song 3 Great Alabama Icons offered an interesting perspective on George Wallace while at the same time condemning him for his racist leadership. Many of the things mentioned in their song mirror what John Lewis said comparing McCain to Wallace during the presidential race - that he made political hay by stoking and exploiting racism. Their music has made this Northerner completely rethink his view of the South.

The Allman Brothers did a benefit for Obama shortly before the election with the Dead (although the Allmans didn't use their band name for contractual reasons) and when I interviewed Gov't Mule in 08 they were very outspoken against Bush and pro Obama.

Real country music is part of the fabric of this country and a treasure. While you may not have a taste for it, millions of hard-working-union-minded-red-blooded Americans were raised on it and have a very strong connection with that genre. It's not my personal style of music either but I have a healthy respect for it and those who listen.

If you want to attack individual country music stars who've been sucked into right-wing propaganda, be my guest. But there are plenty who haven't bought into it, either.

"It's not my personal style of music either but I have a healthy respect for it and those who listen."
Why do you have a 'healthy respect' for the genre and it's fans? What makes them better than others?

The Dixie Chicks incident to me reconfirmed the 'backwardness' of the genre.

When I speak of America's diversity, I am talking about modern times.

34. Everyone believes their group is the heart and soul of America. Ever hear Michael Moore?
In every speech he tells Progressives that they are the majority, that most Americans agree with them.

There is no heart and soul of America. We are a bunch of individuals who believe our rights should be protected by the government, even though we can't agree on those rights or that government.

37. I used to like him.
When he first started he had an honest passion and a lot of humility, and it was very fresh to hear.

Now he's like a porn joke of himself. He swaggers and struts and believes the press releases his PR people write, all the while putting out crap music that wouldn't cut it in any other genre. I mean, compare him to Charlie Daniels. Charlie has become a vile man, full of racism and hatred of anything not him. But when he shuts up, he's still one hell of a musician. Adkins is nothing but a tone-deaf chump, a voice that would get booted off most karaoke stages, and a hat. He lost the soul he once had, and all he can find to replace it with is hatred.

18. "Country?" my ass!
All of these so-called present day "Country," performers, sound alike. There is absolutely no individual personality or song style. They wanted to be rock stars but sucked at that, so they went country and the boobs bought into it. They rake in the bucks for piss poor performances yet they dress like panhandlers.

You may not like country music, but the old timers actually wrote and sang stories of the common man. They were ballad protesters and had in most cases lived the life or knew the life they sang of. They came from very poor to middle class families, they served in the military, they were willing to place their careers in jeopardy to support a cause they believed in, and they all truly supported each other. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, etc., etc.

38. There are still those kind around.
Don't confuse the marketed crap you hear most of the time with the whole genre. Some of the good stuff still creeps onto the radio, but there's a lot that doesn't.

Even some of the mainstream country artists can sing when they are allowed to:
I think this guy has one of the best country voices ever, even if most of what he recorded was bland.

most country artists are republican. They were usually mostly not wealthy cowboys and so called hillbillies. They didn't have a lot of money so what drew them to the republicans. I think they are racists.

28. Many (most?) country singers have led hardscrabble lives & are not that well-educated
They probably grew up with oldtimer family members who filled their heads with garbage about the "revenooooers" and the "gubbmint" trying to shut down their "enterprises"...and when they found their avenue to riches & fame they carried that mindset with them.

Simple people fall for simplistic ideas..not a lot of thought necessary:(

33. Reagan and Racism, that's why.
The South used to be Democratic, even after the Civil Rights Bill was signed. The South was adjusting to desegregation and Civil Rights, and many people who had fought those issues had begun to accept that they were wrong, and to change.

Then Reagan and Lee Atwater developed the "Southern Strategy." Reagan campaigned on "states' rights," which everyone in the South knew was shorthand for "Support racism, fight desegregation." Reagan kicked off his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which is a decent enough place, but outside of Mississippi it was famous for only one thing--the unpunished (not unsolved, because everyone knew who had done it) murders of three Civil Rights activists a decade before.

There was no ambiguity to what Reagan was saying. He wasn't there to unite America, to talk about what we all shared in common, to appeal to the greater good and the American Ideal of equality. Instead, he praised States' Rights. They were right in Philadelphia to fight the federal government's incursion into the state, to fight for their own freedoms, and to fight for their way of life. Get it? Get what he was saying?

That was the Southern Strategy. Tell the racists they were right all along, that it was good and virtuous for them to kill kids who supported Civil Rights. Hate the Feds, hate equality, hate non-whites and non-Christians. Your way of life is being attacked, and you must band together and fight the attackers.

The sad thing is, most southerners aren't racist, or no more so than the rest of the country. Less so, in my experience, even. But in the South we always hear the hatred of the rest of the country--read this thread, for instance. We hear the name calling and the attacks and the criticisms and the accusations of sleeping with sisters and all that. And there's the whole flag issue, to make it worse. To any of us in the South, the rebel flag is just a symbol of our uniqueness, of our culture. Not the racist culture, just all the stuff that makes us different. When the flag is attacked by outsiders, Southerners feel that their whole way of life--which doesn't include segregation anymore--is being attacked So the South feels at odds with the rest of the country. Sadly, that comes out as support for the Republicans, because the Republicans so far manage to sell themselves as anti-federal government. They pretend it's about welfare and government spending, but the Republicans spend more and give away more than the Democrats. It's really about the lack of respect of the South by many Democrats, and the ability of the Republicans to cash in on that.

Anyway, Reagan is still the worst president we've ever had. He's the presidential equivalent of Plessy vs Ferguson.

Worley's a good singer, which is rare for country. He's even got a sense of musicality, and an ear for lyrics sometimes, which is also rare these days. It's a shame he doesn't use them better.

As for country, the country community has no authority to talk about being 'open minded'. Recall what happened to the Dixie Chicks? Recall that the community turned their back on them. The country community can drop dead! :puke:

Everyone knows genuine country music more or less died sometime in the 70s. Only Willie and Merle are left of the true rebels.

43. the guy's former job was working on a rig
so he has friends in the industry and he has an attachment to that way of life like anyone who has worked a significant period of their live in a professional field. I just watched it online and his comments weren't political, they were focused on that industry. I think there is a fair argument that if we consume 20% of the world's oil supply that if we shut down offshore drilling and continue to consume that 20%, it should be viewed by the rest of the world as rather arrogant that we are outsourcing the environmental risks on the rest of the world. And at this moment there's not a lot of alternatives since our infrastructure is based on oil and alternatives don't have the cost competitiveness nor the scale to quickly adapt to anything else, though natural gas would be the most feasible.
