Gibbs Says Obama Baffled By Barton's BP Comments, Biden Swipes Too
Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 04:00 PM by cal04
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/gibbs-says-obama-baffled-by-bartons-bp-comments-biden-swipes-too.php

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said this afternoon that when he briefed President Obama on Rep. Joe Barton's apology to BP, the president was baffled. "He shook his head and ... said, 'I can't understand why anybody would say that,'" Gibbs told reporters during his daily briefing.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden had just told the press that Barton's comments were "outrageous" and "insensitive." Biden said Barton's comments seemed "incredibly out of touch," especially since the lawmaker hails from Texas, which also has been impacted by the spill. The vice president said anyone in Florida, Louisiana or Texas should disassociate themselves from Barton's remarks.

"This is an entire way of life that's in jeopardy," Biden said. He said he's surprised that for Barton would say he's "ashamed" because the White House is being "tough an oil company who caused the problem." Biden added, "There's no shakedown, it's insisting on responsible conduct, responsible response to something they caused."

6. I wish he'd use an Oval Office speech to point out to America just how corrupt we've become
That some of us are sucking up to the most destructive entities on earth just to get at the bribe money.

That some of us don't think corporations are accountable for anything they do, ever.

That some of us don't believe that anyone is a citizen unless they have shareholders.

I'm sure it could be phrased in such a way that it stuck to principles and let the public figure out which party the assholes belong to.

14. Oh, I agree. That would be good.
I don't think that Mr. Bipartisanship has it in him, though.

8. "I can't understand why anybody would say that'"
is what he said. Yeah, not an outright slam. And a mild wtf? There are many in Congress calling Barton to task, though, as is the Vice President. Obama may feel it's enough to let Barton fall on his own accord, in his own realm.

21. He is not baffled
about republicans going to extremes. It is more the complete stupidity and lack of any political sense that is baffling. But heck, if Barton wants to fry himself politically, far be it from President Obama to stand in the way.

9. What really, really ticks them off is that they will NOT get their hands
on this money... That's the bottom line, Barbour, Barton, this is what bothers them. They will not personally enjoy these funds....

11. Jindal is also sitting on a potful of money, millions of which he has
shared very little to his citizens. Keeping it for his campaign I guess.
