The oil is here - Destin FL
OIL SPOTTED NEAR THE PASS: City Council to hold special meeting this morning as county struggles to close pass

June 17

8 A.M. UPDATE: Tar balls are heavily concentrated on the stretch of Okaloosa Island near the pier, both on the beach and in the waters just off shore, according to visual reports Thursday morning.

The city of Destin issued the following warning on its website, "Oil product has been spotted near East Pass. The Coast Guard and other BP resources have been notified and are being deployed ASAP to the area."

Oil slick 3-5 miles out.

"The Coast Guard and other BP resources have been notified..."

So the Coast Guard is a "BP resource"?

Let's just flip it around. Various (other) BP Resources and the Coast Guard have been notified.

That's all.

It says "the Coast Guard and *other* BP resources", NOT ""the Coast Guard and BP resources"

Do you not understand the difference?

13. Other, meaning not federal, meaning BP resources
If the other wasn't there, you'd just say it put the Coast Guard WITH BP because that's what you want to see.

15. Oh, for crying out loud
I and Democrats
I and other Democrats

In the first phrase, I am setting myself apart from Democrats.
In the second phrase, I am counting myself among Democrats.

Do you not understand the significance of the word "other"?

5. Did they get the pass closed?
I live in Ft Walton and was on the beach last night after work, there were thousands of tarballs in the surf, so sad!!! I know the oil slick is right behind them. I feel as helpless as I do when there's hurricane barreling towards us.

18. Evidently not - "11 A.M. UPDATE: Tar balls still heavy, boom not fully deployed"
11 a.m. UPDATE: The crew deploying boom across the Destin Pass for the first time ran into some difficulties Wednesday night, including weather issues, and wasn’t able to complete the task.

Because the county decided to close the pass with oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill still three miles offshore, the failure to completely deploy the boom was not a major issue, said county Public Safety Director Dino Villani.

“They got about halfway through when they ran into problems. That’s OK. That’s why we started early,” he said. “They need to get a feel for what they’re doing so they can get on a regular routine.”

9:30 A.M. UPDATE: Waters and beaches around the Okaloosa Island pier are clear, according to pier employees. Dolphins were playing at the end, they said.

Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 11:27 AM by flyarm
they were told by Authorities to wash with Comet..this oil was not seen on the surface of the Gulf water..the story has been kept out of local media. The beach was closed after the people reported the oil on themselves. And BP put their thugs on the beach ..

we now in Fla must be our own reporters to report the real news!

So many of us are saying we're worried this is going to be a BAD SEASON!!! Wanted to believe it was all a dream, but the NIGHTMARE remains!!!

Stuck here in Texas for another week and didn't want to be here in the first place! A sister reunion that I wanted to bow out of but didn't have the heart to do it! Sorry Texans, I don't like this place even though I spent many years here and went to school here too!

16. When I lived on the East Coast, we had reunions
at Destin every summer. Beautiful beaches. And we rented a fantastic house from a friend of the family. Such good memories.

And so sad today, especially since so many people point their finger at Obama. Some of these people personally told me that they were in favor in oil drilling in the Gulf. I don't have the heart to tell those people that they and people like them bear some responsibility.

Sometimes the veil slips aside for a moment and you get a look at the naked truth.

43. ahhhh damn
Fort Walton Beach. We used to perform there every year. Lots of good memories. Now you got me, too.

I just can't stand what is happening. It is salt in the wound to have people try to make this be about petty partisan politics or about money.

And notice how all of the major environmental groups are silent? Turns out they have been "partnering" with BP for "a greener future" and taking funding from them.

There is some sort of deep rage simmering and growing around the country, not just because of the catastrophe but also because of how we have been so cynically betrayed and misled.

I went fishing there several years ago with my husband, it was the most beautiful beach and the water was amazing, so clear you could see several feet down to the bottom. 42. Used Too Run Around A Lot Right Where That Picture Was Taken!
Treasure Island, Madiera, Indian Rocks and the whole chain right there! Lived in Largo for quite a while before moving south!

Now the Sarasota area and my little community just north of Venice! Know the scenes so well and just swam in the Gulf before I flew over here!! So many of us felt we "needed" to be there almost every day because of what we felt was coming!!

RAGE IS NOT EVEN STRONG ENOUGH!! I can just hear the broken hearts, almost from here! We ALL talked about how much hurt we were going to feel and how our hearts would be broken!! I realize most in America feel RAGE, but living there is so much more devastating! It's hard to explain the "reality" of this loss!!!

CAN'T even look at the animals even though I was already contacted before I left to help with them should I be needed, but wonder how I can do it!! They will need to be helped and the turtles just started nesting last month!!

right now!! Sorry to hear about your troubles, we took care of my mother-in-law for 10 years and NONE of it was easy!! My husband's brother never helped out so she came to live with us. I will save some of the sand for sure because it won't ever be the same!

In the years to come I'm sure our white sand will ALWAYS be a talking point from those of us who knew it so well! For those who haven't had the pleasure of the enjoyment and beauty it's hard to explain what it REALLY means!! To see it, to lie in it, to play in it always so soft and fine glistening in the sun and watching the sunsets!

I'm sure my feelings will sharpen even more when I actually see it up close! This is going to be so very difficult to deal with!
