All I heard was how awesome he speaks. Now He gives one speech y'all don't like and you are ready to impeach the guy.

Carry on...just an observation.

17. Let's just say that he didn't
use the bully pulpit as well as he could have. Is he afraid of something or given his intelligence, willfully ignorant or politically inclined to Corps?
The barrier shit won't work and will divert monies that could be used more effectively.

First of all, DU, as a collective, never loved President Obama.

Secondly, I have not seen anyone here advocating impeachment.

7. There's a lot more to it than just that.
I guess it depends on what your individual priorities are.

Those of us who believed we'd finally have transparency in government...it hasn't happened.

Those who wanted to see our rights restored that were taken away by Bush...still waiting.

Gays and equality? Forget about it. Being a minority, Obama should know how it feels to be discriminated against. Apparently not.

People who are outraged that Bushco tortured people in our name, and who hoped to see justice brought to those involved...forget about it.

Health care for all with a public option. HA! Really? We believed that?

The list goes on and on.

Yes, Obama has done a lot of great things. Yes, he had a lot of problems handed to him. Yes, he is better than McSame/Palin.

But the reality of it is he's come up short from what he promised a lot of us. If your priorities have been tended to, he looks pretty good. If they haven't, the longer it takes the harder it is to believe all that change stuff we were promised.

For the people on the Gulf coast, who are still hurting from Katrina, Obama's speech last night didn't offer a lot of hope. I talked to a friend down there this afternoon, and things are grim. They put on a dog and pony show for Obama and the film crews, and the minute he leaves, all the workers cleaning up leave.

That isn't Obama's fault, but he's a smart man, and he should know this is going on and put a stop to it.

16. I remember too. It was during the Democratic convention in 2004
I remember thinking at the time, this man could be President some day. However, since he's been in office, he seems to have been neutered. He had our support to change many of the things he spoke about during his campaign. Then he surrounded himself with Washington insiders and what I think are questionable advisers; who have convinced him to be a consolatory President. Avoiding confrontation, always giving away too much when attempting to compromise. I guess I was naive to think he wasn't a corporate Democrat. I thought him being a black man, that he would be able to empathize with the common people. It appears more and more that I thought wrong. I still think he's a good man. I just don't like the way he settles for scraps for the people when he has the power and support to fill our plates.

Maybe TPTB got to him? Maybe they got dirt on him from somewhere or they've threatened to assassinate him if he doesn't maintain the status quo? I don't know, I'm just terribly disappointed in how things are working out.

However, I don't think it racial at all, so trying to put it in a racial context probably isn't helpful to studying the core issue.

85. It is obvious to me that some of the way he is treated is rooted
in race. This doesn't mean that the criticism comes from a racist place or that DUers are racist (before everyone gets offended) but to deny that the racial values that still persist in our culture do not play a role in defining our discourse is crazy. I encourage everyone to watch the Michelle Obama speech from the primaries that she gave in Wilmington, DE in January 2008. She talks about how their whole lives the bar has been set, they have met it, and it has immediately been changed to avoid giving them credit.

64. My guess is Hillary would not have allowed the repukes to define the health care reform debate
for months, as Obama did. My guess is she would have been a little more hands on and wouldn't have needed a joint address to the nation to push an effort most Americans agreed with from the outset. My guess is that there wouldn't have been a last minute scramble for votes to finally pass what was left of the reforms.

Of course, we're off into the land of what if now, but I think the odds that she'd have done things somewhat differently are far greater than the chances she'd have done things exactly the same.

How can you say things would be different when we've got an Administration run by Clinton staff?

The only difference between what we have now and Hillary is she wouldn't have done a thing with health care, wouldn't have helped any low income people, and wouldn't reach out to the Islamic world the way Obama has.

That's what is really comical to me. I wish we'd have gotten someone more liberal, that's why I chose Obama over Hillary. But we got her agenda anyway so what is everybody all up in arms about.

66. Not remotely what I said
I said I don't know what the PUMAs are bitching about because they're getting Hillary's agenda. They should be thrilled.

Except for health care reform because she said she wasn't going to do that in her first term. But as for what we got, yeah, it was pretty much what she would have gotten, just not so soon.

I understand the people who voted for Cynthia McKinney, they want a country just this side of socialism. But Hillary's supporters?? Their "disappointment" makes no sense at all.

59. Our President has had more on his plate than any president
since FDR. He's been in office 1 1/2 years and people expect him to have already cured all of the ills left by Bush/Cheney PLUS everything that's happened since (BP oil spill). IMO, he's done an amazing job. For one he's prevented another real depression and too many other things to list. I hope he doesn't run in 2012 - this country doesn't deserve him and he could be living an awesome life. He went into this with the best of intentions, to help this f up'd county. I don't think he had any idea what a nightmare this would be. For him and his family's sake, I truly hope he doesn't run again.

61. Ummmm......
I could care less what he SAYS. I didn't listen to him much when he was a candidate and I don't pay much attention to what he says now. I do, however, pay a great deal of attention to what he DOES. Color me unimpressed. His is the administration of lost opportunities.

71. I liked Gravel and Kucinich :) but Obama does give decent speeches I guess.
Speeches have never done much for me though.

76. his debut was a successful launch
of a new product that ranks up there with Apples 1984 superbowl commercial.
I hope the marketeers who packaged him got a big bonus from his bosses.

78. I knew exactly what I was getting in the primary and the general.
I knew how high the stakes were and that the three-decade neo-clown mess would take years to clean up.

I know that it's going to take at least a few straight Democratic presidencies to do it.

I just think many people on our side don't live in the reality that America is more likely to have an alien president than a progressive one.

They expect America to adopt sweeping European-style changes and do it fast, but forget about the looming Corptocracy that will do every single damned thing in their power to prevent that from happening.

I don't think Obama is a bad guy. I think it's this nation's way of running things, larger than any one person, that needs to change and change fast. American citizens won't gather in the millions because we're not starving yet. So they look for one man to, right then and there, reverse our wealthy authoritarian greed and centuries-old zero-sum power.

It's kind of silly, when you think about it.

84. Your speaking in hyperbole
and that ain't a form of poetry.

It has been an evolving "relationship" and what works in a potential candidate, won't sustain you as a President. Nor should it.

90. Saying we don't like a speech is not akin to asking for impeachment.
The fact that you conflate the two is the reason
that thinking people are leaving this site in droves.

Whether they are escorted off or slipping out the
back on their own.

I'm glad you think its funny, y'all.

:hi:
