Senate Wants Jindal Oil Spill Records Open
Governor's Office Fights Releasing Some Documents

POSTED: 5:09 pm CDT June 16, 2010

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Louisiana's Senate has voted to make sure governor's office records pertaining to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill are available to the public and that they are archived for at least 10 years.

The Senate approved the language as an amendment to another bill Wednesday.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration has gone along with some attempts to open up governor's office records but has vehemently fought bills letting the public see any documents pertaining to the governor's "deliberative process" and requiring the preservation of those documents.

The oil spill records amendment by Sen. Robert Adley, a Benton Republican, passed in the Senate without objection and now faces a House vote. The governor's office has not yet commented on it.

7.  Robert Adley wants Bobby Jindal's records made public

Sen. Robert Adley wants Bobby Jindal's records made public and calls for transparency on oil spill
June 17, 5:13 AMNew Orleans Conservative ExaminerClifford Bryan

An amendment passed yesterday in the Louisiana state Senate. HB 37 was mostly about other records being made public but Senator Robert Adley was able to add an amendment to have Governor Jindal's records made public and it passed. The piggybacking amendment was quickly approved without objection and House Bill 37 was passed on a 37-0 vote.

The passage of this amendment seeks to make public any records pertaining to Governor Bobby Jindal's deliberation on the BP oil spill. This effort is led curiously by members of Jindal's Republican party. Adley was a Democrat less than 10 years ago. He supported long time Jindal rival Kathleen Blanco for Governor. The black caucus tried something similar a few months ago. So it appears that it shouldn't be that hard to get bi-partisan support for this effort. It goes to the House next.

To be fair to Jindal. The governors before him have enjoyed this privilege. The dichotomy of the situation lies in the fact that Jindal came into office trumpeting openness and transparency. Never mind the fact that Louisiana is one of only a handful of states that still practices something this archaic.

We could just call it the "Jindal rule". The guy is really too well schooled to let him just roam around. In fact he should look on it as an honor. He's running circles around the legislature. It's time to put the brakes on this.

..more..
