Another person cracks, a family dies
Home in Calif murder-suicide in foreclosure

A man who shot his wife to death and critically wounded his 3-year-old son before killing himself had money troubles and the family home was in foreclosure, police said Tuesday.

Money problems - and marital troubles that may have stemmed from the man's financial situation - were being investigated as possible motives in Sunday night's shootings, said Sgt. Rick Martinez.

Foreclosure "could have been the issue," he said.

The 3-year-old boy, who hid behind a trash can in the backyard for more than 12 hours before he was rescued Monday morning, was in critical but stable condition Tuesday after being treated for at least three wounds to his hip, shoulder and torso, Martinez said.

The 54-year-old man shot his 39-year-old wife and tried to kill his two sons, police said. The 3-year-old was trapped in a corner of the backyard. A shot aimed at his 5-year-old brother missed. The boy was inside the house and the shot was fired through an open doorway, Martinez said.

1. Wanna bet he got the gun to "protect his family"?

2. I'm sorry, but I have to call bullshit on that guy...
I have been through both foreclosure and BK, and I have never thought of killing the ones that I love. The guy has serious mental problems.

5. Everyone has their own threshold of tolerance to stress...
This guy was losing his business as well as personal bankruptcy and losing his home.

I wouldn't kill myself either, but I consider myself to be very strong willed.

8. As I said in my post, I have gone through all that, and I NEVER thought
of killing my family.

The guy had mental problems.

10. You aren't the yardstick to which the rest of us are measured...
Like I said in my post... we all have different stress thresholds. We all have mental problems of some sort... there are no perfect humans.

12. I'm sorry, but I still don't follow that. Humans are not programmed to murder
other humans. Yes, we all have mental issues, but does it lead to murdering ones own family???

I cannot condone what he did, as should no other person.

13. I see no one condoning his actions...
I certainly am not.

I feel very, very sorry for this man... and I know he's not alone... I'm betting there are a lot of people out there that feel the same hopeless way. It's sad they don't have enough imagination to change their lives with short term ideas, instead of permanent failure.

3. These stories are tragic
I'm glad he wasn't able to kill the kids. I hope the 3 year old is OK and survives. How terribly sad.

4. This story is too tragic to turn this thread into a pro/anti gun meme.
There are millions of people in financial straits and this is what we should concentrate on IMHO.

6. You're right, of course...
Quite frankly I'm surprised we haven't seen more of this sort of thing. We as a society haven't been too good at supporting each other, or teaching people how to cope. I bet a very large percentage of us have minimal coping skills.

7. Yep, get your votes together to fix the constitution
you know like the people who banned booze did. Else, this is not my problem.

People killed each other long before guns.

9. WHY??? For God's sake people! If all is lost in the traditional world, go
find a way to live in the non-traditional world! At least try living in the woods or the mountains or something and dying that way rather than taking out the family and yourself!

FFS!

11. I've always thought along those terms too...
I could see myself losing the concrete and steel tower, 50 hour a week job downtown... and work in a little drug/sundries store... and live in the little L-shaped room up above the store... but I have a really awesome imagination... this poor sod clearly wasn't blessed in that way... he didn't see any way out.

I feel for men these days... pride comes before a fall... those poor kids...
