Whales for Sale
Source: Discovery News

A week from now, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) will meet in Agadir, Morocco, to discuss a "compromise" proposal that would allow Japan, Norway, and Iceland to continue commercial whaling, at supposedly reduced and sustainable levels, for the next ten years - notwithstanding the existence of a 24-year-old moratorium on such whaling.

The rationale being offered by proponents of this deal is that, although banned, commercial whaling continues anyway (under the guise of, for example, "scientific research"), so it makes sense to at least bring it under better control. Additionally, they say, the IWC is at a standstill, an impasse; there is a stalemate among its many members, which are divided roughly equally between pro- and anti-whaling nations.

But an investigation in this weekend's edition of London's Sunday Times newspaper has underlined just how manufactured this "deadlock" really is, that at least some of the countries that attend the IWC and vote for Japan do so because they are financially "encouraged" to do so, and that they would switch sides in a heartbeat if offered sufficient inducement.

4. That has not been working.
North Americans don't even protest the whaling done in the US and Canada, even though many of us are offended by whaling.

This compromise has the potential do some good.

3. "...under better control?" By whom? Seriously.
I ask this everytime someone defends lifting the moratorium. They don't enforce anything now, how will they do it when it's "legal" again?

10. Exactly right!!
Somehow they think they can control it better when it happens more than when it wasn't allowed at all. I don't see the logic in allowing hunting so less whales will be killed.

5. There's a disconnect here...
I'm guessing the conservatives are all in favor of this compromise. But it's interesting... people do drugs anyway, people immigrate anyway, but they don't support legalizing those things just because they haven't been effective in stopping them.

Likewise, they claim that some people abuse welfare, and therefore they want to get rid of it.

Bottom line is if something happens anyway, you decide whether it's something which should or should not be illegal for them to do, and then actually go after them for doing it. If they're going to take action by making this deal, they might as well take action by actually doing something about it.

6. Do Iceland, Norway, and Japan seem more like US conservatives or liberals?
I don't know the answer, but I raised that point because I doubt saying this is due to the evil conservatives really does much about the problem other than making a boogey man.

11. So.. how much do they cost?
And can we raise enough to buy all the hunting rights? Imagine how it would be to hoist them on their own petard, were they to get this BS passed with their bribery.
