8-Year-Olds Hospitalized After Drinking Vial of PCP "Found on Playground"

8-Year-Olds Hospitalized After Drinking Vial of PCP

The only people who do PCP anymore are time-capusled beat poets who haven't yet heard of meth. Oh, and if you're going to get technical about it, two eight-year-old cousins in Renton who found a vial filled with yellow liquid on a playground outside of their school and, kids being kids, decided to put the unknown substance in their mouths.

One of the cousins poured out half the liquid into his hand and licked it. The other then drank what was left in the vial.

When the boys got home one of their moms found the empty vial in her son's pocket. Apparently equipped with the drug-sniffing prowess of a trained German Shepherd, the mom then sniffed the vial and whisked the kids off to the hospital, later telling police it had smelled of PCP.

(Note to authorities: PCP-filled playgrounds may be of lesser concern than the mom who can differentiate one drug from another by scent.)

Once at the hospital, physicians confirmed that the boys had indeed ingested the drug. Hopefully making them the only kids at Kennydale Elementary to have personal knowledge of the effects of Angel Dust.

AMAZING how the mom JUST HAPPENED to know what it was!

Do we REALLY think they found it ON THE PLAYGROUND?

2. PCP? Is that Angel Dust? I am 34 and have no idea what it smells like.
It was not a big thing growing up in the 80's into the 90's. Sounds very suspicious.

3. I can't see my own boys having done something like that at their age. They're kind of
squeamish, and taking in an unknown substance that may have been drunk by someone else as well.. ick.

4. This was on the news locally over the weekend
I'm with you: Interesting that Mom just happened to know what the drug was, and that the kids actually ingested it.

One would think that kids that age would be old enough to know not to put a substance into their mouths without knowing what it might be...

I'm predicting an arrest in 3..2..1, and it won't be the kids.

8. I get the skepticism here, but PCP DOES have a distinctive chemical odor.
If you've ever smelled it, you'll know the odor forever. I had a roomate (in another lifetime) who did PCP a couple of times. I'm positive that I could still identify it today by smell alone. I never did it myself. I did plenty of other drugs, but that (and meth) were never on my list.

It has a very distinct smell that I would describe as "burnt rubber soaked in rubbing alcohol".

13. I think I could probably identify it also
based just on the very few experiences I've had more than 3 decades ago.

I seem to recall more of a minty smell though, and it may be that at the time (70s) it was applied to mint leaves and then mixed with pot.

Not a drug I would ever ever ever want to try again

9. Isn't age 8 old enough to know better than drink from a random vial.
that's more like something a 3 year old would do

12. I have an answer for that one too.
Liquid PCP reacts to light, and is normally kept in small brown bottles to cut the amount of light reaching the liquid. It's very common for people to put them into small glass vanilla bottles, or various extract bottles (my former roomates dealer sold it in bottles of Peppermint Extract).

It's still odd that an 8 year old would drink from a random bottle, but it's slightly more understandable if you know that the bottle may have been labeled as something sweet.

10. I don't know what happened
and you all could be right but knowing what something smells like is not evidence that the kid got it from her. I know what PCP looks and smells like but I never done it. My ex-wife's cousin like to smoke cannabis with PCP.
