The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad is seeking to fill the position of Political Assistant in the Political Section in Basrah, south Iraq.

BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:
Provides researches, reporting and advice to the Political Section of the U.S Regional Office, reporting to the American Officers in charge of Political Affairs. Responsible for gathering information for specific political section projects and assignments.
The employee advises officers on a variety of sensitive political issues and related matters identifying key issues and events through interviews, the news media and other sources. Pays particular attention to developments in building a democratic Iraq, i.e., the electoral process, bilateral and multilateral policies and personalities making policy. Information is summarized and presented in a timely fashion to the political office. Keeps track of biographic information for all reports, making sure names, political affiliations and other information is correct. Draws on a variety of published sources, legislative enactments, official press releases and government reports. Acts as escort or interpreter for visiting officials. Travels out of the regular duty station to outlying regions to accompany supervisors to meetings and conferences. Develops and maintains an extensive range of high-level contacts in the government, political parties, press, educational institutions and related organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Each applicant must address each selection criterion detailed below specifically and comprehensively, in addition to submitting a CV/résumé.
1. Completion of a university degree (BA/BS) in political science, English, history, international relations or other closely related fields is required.
2. One to two years of experience in the field of social research, journalism, translating or closely related field is required.
3. Position requires the ability to use basic office Microsoft office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, e-mail) as well as good typing skills in order to prepare written narrative reports.
4. Level IV (Fluent) in English and Arabic are required
5. Must have a good knowledge of Iraqi political, economic and social structure, institutions, political parties and key political figures, along with a basic understanding of U.S. foreign policy toward Iraq.
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA:
* Management will consider nepotism/ conflict of interest, budget and visa status in determining successful candidacy.
* Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.
* Must be eligible to receive a security clearance certification.
* Under PSA-Plus guidelines, non-host country citizens (American and foreign nationals) must have a host country visa status, which will permit them to obtain work.
