I am so dreading this upcoming summer.
Edited on Mon Jun-14-10 07:30 AM by trumad
They say that Central Florida can expect a heat index of 103 today and 104 tomorrow. And it's only June 14th.

They say that this should be one of the most active hurricane seasons on record.

Add the decimation of the oil spill to the west coast and I predict this will be a summer that we'll never forget.

1. I think you're right.
The oil alone will make this summer one to remember. The storms will just be lagniappe.

2. Everyone is afraid you are right.
And hoping you are wrong....what a mess we find ourselves in.

3. It's been hotter than July here in Savannah
95+ every day. We usually don't get that until late July/August. And it is not cooling down much at night.

4. I just came in from watering the garden.
It's presently 87 with a heat index of 98 here in the SC Low Country. Temp this afternoon should be 98 with a heat index of 110. I am NOT amused!

I check the little digital clock temp sign when I pass the military base on the way in.

It was 645 am. already 80 degrees. It's only June 14th.

yet another surface of the sun hot summer.

I live in Austin, Texas, by the way.

6. The heat is driving the sharks up the coastline, too.
More shark bites aren't good, of course tourists are always surprised (locals are rarely ever bitten).

More heat=more warm water=more active, larger storms

Our hurricane boxes are ready and we're hoping we'll be lucky again this summer and not have a 2005 repeat.

11. They've already started in Jacksonville...
but then again, there are always sharks there just waiting to taste those juicy tourist toes, LOL! The locals know when not to go into the water.

Love this Jamaican saying: "taste dat wata. it be salty? den dey be shark in dat wata!"

9. Central Fl. here, too. Must be further inland because the heat index
has been 100+ for the past week. A couple of nights ago you could step outside and fully understand the term "oppressive heat".

Brutal.

I, too, am fearful of what Nature has in store for this area.

10. I was worried when we skipped february this winter up here in Maine that it meant we could be in for
Edited on Mon Jun-14-10 10:07 AM by GreenPartyVoter
a dry scorcher of a summer like '98 was. So far, though, that has not been the case for us, at least in terms of heat. (We did go a long period without rain, and fire warnings have been pretty dire. But there's been some good rain lately so hopefully that has helped.)

I don't envy you guys down there, esp not with the mess in the Gulf added in. :(

13. I envy you up in Maine!
A FB friend of mine from high school is currently posting her Maine pics on a daily basis (her husband's family has property up there, they spend most of the summer each year taking care of it). We used to live in Milford, NH and vacationed all up in there...I miss it so much (just not the black flies, you can keep those!).

15. Yeah, the black flies aren't much fun. Then again, our biggest insects are what, June bugs and
moths? Glad we don't have any Jurassic size ones up here! :P

14. It's supposed to be 99 degrees
in Southeast Virginia today - with a heat index of nearly 110. What's worse is I'm pet-sitting at a house that doesn't have a big enough air conditioning unit for the size of the house. I sleep on the couch downstairs, where it's about 80 degrees at night. I'm guessing upstairs (where the bed is) is at least 90 degrees.

To try to keep the house a little cooler, I covered these GIANT windows (that have no shades) with sheets. My friend came over for a visit yesterday and remarked, "OMG...window treatments done by FEMA".

16. LOL That's pretty funny. Too bad they don't have decent insulated shades, though. That would really
help out.

17. Right???
Well, the couple that own the house are quite elderly and quite thin. I don't even think they notice the heat. I know they sleep upstairs...she's begged me repeatedly to sleep in their bed. I just tell her I sleep on the couch for the dog's sake, which is partly true, as the dog is pretty old, and she can't get up the stairs very well.

Edited on Mon Jun-14-10 11:07 AM by Wiley50
It's awful hot in this 28 ft sailboat on a trailer behind my friend's barn on a 23 acre farm.

I have a 5 year old 5000 BTU Air conditioner with a box fan in front of it. Heat index here in Nashville is 106.

Wish me luck. It's my last chance after 2 failed attempts.
