Fifty-four years later, an 'angel' reconnects with the baby she saved
Fifty-four years later, Gwen Marie Aylward can still picture the stricken man’s face.

Ashen. White with despair over his wife and baby.

Aylward, now 75, was then a 20-year-old Trans World Airlines hostess from Boise, Idaho, six months into her dream job. She stood with pride in her crisp stewardess uniform — black hair curled and cut short, fine, straight features, her airline cap cocked at a jaunty angle. She was the only hostess on a 40-person aircraft flying a multi-stop route from San Francisco back to her base and new home in Kansas City.

“Coffee, tea or milk?” she routinely asked her passengers.

She would not know it, but before this flight was over she’d be offering a bounty of compassion.
