13. Catherina, The US vs England World Cup soccer match is about to start
Understand your response in the context of the BP threads (and agree with it about those ones) but that's not what this one is about.

:-)

20. Those who discount the world cup should give it a try.
This is a truly global celebration of sportmanship, patriotism, and national culture. Much prefer it to all the puffed-up hype over the Olympics.

32. +1. It's a great event, even if you're not a footie fan.
Go find a pub/bar/cinema that's playing it on a big screen. A place with plenty of fans and plenty of drink is ideal. ;)

41. and if your home country isn't playing...
... then you cheer for the country that's playing the one who you DONT want to see win.

There are a good quantity of people in Scotland who will cheer for any team playing against England and hope THEY win instead of the English. I know some personally. They don't hate the English, they're definitely not racist but they're definitely very nationalistic and if their team is knocked out nothing gives them more satisfaction than to see England lose at a football (Association or Rugby) match.

26. Just spent the last week in London. Pissed off a lot of "pissed" blokes in the pubs
...with a few "USA! USA!" chants.  But yeah--WTF is wrong for cheering your country on? We do it for the Olympics, and since America is late to soccer it's pretty awesome that we're as good as we are.

So I've been back in SF for less than 16 hours, still loopy from jet lag, but the other thing that I got into with the Brits about is this: The media over there are actually SYMPATHETIC to BP. The general consensus is that we are mean, bullying yankees, and Tony Hayward is just an "affable geologist" who found himself in an unfortunate position and is now the most hated man in America. Seriously!

I got a lot of Brits yelling at me when I brought up the fact that their "affable geologist" is a greedy corporate pig who thought he could get away with doing it on the cheap. Believe me, they were ready to pay for my flight home after that!

42. FAIL again.
It's a football match!

It's about cheering for your country's side. I could equally have said "Go England! Go kick some Yankee arse back to America...".

No offence against the English was intended and none was taken.
