Teabaggers protest trash pickup!
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 11:10 AM by Joanne98
Give Me (Trashy) Liberty

Now that health care reform, such as it is, has passed, Tea Partiers seem to be having trouble coming up with other galvanizing issues. To wit: this weekend's protests by three Tea Party-ish factions in Georgia over the latest Bolshevik plot to tyrannize We the People - mandatory trash pick-up. Residents will be charged $17.86 a month to get their garbage collected. Really: When you consider outrages being perpetrated in our nation today, what better target is there?

"This is tantamount to Obamacare," said Debbie Dooley, an organizer of the protest. "It's socialized. It's the government forcing people to purchase something and that's unconstitutional."

LAWRENCEVILLE — Three political activist groups are joining together Saturday to protest Gwinnett County’s new trash plan, which begins July 1.

The Four Corners Tea Party, FreedomWorks Gwinnett and Gwinnett Citizens for Responsible Government have organized the protest, which will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the gazebo next to the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse on the Lawrenceville square.

Debbie Dooley, one of the event’s organizers, said the protesters will be urging the Gwinnett County commissioners to repeal the trash plan — and, in particular, remove the bill from homeowners’ property taxes.

“It’s our way of letting the commissioners know we remember their vote and we’re not going to forget it,” said Debbie Dooley, a Dacula resident and the Georgia grassroots coordinator for FreedomWorks. “We want to make sure they are held accountable for their vote.”

The county’s new solid waste program will make trash collection mandatory for all homeowners in unincorporated Gwinnett County. City residents are not affected by the plan.

As part of the program, Gwinnett County has contracted with five private haulers that will each serve a designated area of unincorporated Gwinnett.

The base service fee — which includes weekly trash pickup of household garbage, recycling and pickup of bulky items such as old furniture and white goods such as refrigerators — will be $17.86 per month. Yard waste collection can be purchased from the hauler for an additional fee.

1. Go ahead, Georgia. Let the trash pile up. It's not like I'm going to be spending my tourist
dollars in your state anytime soon anyway...

17. The Pacific Northwest isn't perfect. Dino Rossi is a quadrennial reminder of that.
But he reminds us of the constant need to keep the assholes out of statewide office.

5. I thought they worshipped pickup trucks.
There's something downright unpatriotic about that. I mean, after all, isn't driving a pickup truck all the qualifications you need to be elected to office now?

7. County should enforce its health and safety laws
They're probably afraid they'll get shot though. We need one of these laws in parts of our county. It would make me mad personally though, it's cheaper for me to haul my own garbage. $40.00 every 6 months instead of $120.

11. What's the beef? These idiots want it both ways. They don't want government in there
private business and then they cry because they want business. What is the beef? Why shouldn't they pay to hnave their trash picked up? In the city I live in they have no choice, pay for pick up, period. In the county you have to bring your own trash to center areas. Remember republicans you are the ones who cry there is no free lunch. Then again you want the free lunch for yourselves and not anyone else.

22. This is exactly how Jacksonville is...
every week there's something new which the republican mayor and largely republican city council imposes upon them, then the constituents whine like little children. Their real estate tax breaks are about to be rolled back to make up for decreased property tax values, and they're whining yet again. My only argument against the increased fees (although we aren't in Jax) is that the rich pay the exact same amount as the poor and middle class, not in a percentage. That's regressive taxation and IMO not fair by any means.

12. If the entire contract was given to one Big "Public Friendly" Corporation
at Twice the price, would the FreedomWorks group still protest?

13. Actually, that sounds like a bargain to me...I doubt they will find any cheaper
trash hauling service anywhere....Do they burn it now, in a 55 gallon drum out behind the old Dodge pickup on cement blocks? Or do they haul it to the dump themselves? I have done it both of those ways, and I'll pay somebody $18 a month every time rather than load up the van with garbage bags every week....

20. You wanna know what really sucks??
That the millionaire with the mansion on the beach in Ponte Vedra who puts out 30 bags of trash pays the same amount of trash pickup fees as I do with my little house and 7 bags of weekly trash.

How's the fair again???
