Corn farm subsidies, Iowa caucuses, and obesity
Is it true that since farm subsidies for the Midwest since the early 70s, the use of processed syrup from corn from the Midwest has caused obesity, and that the main reason that people in politics don't touch this issue much is because the Iowa caucuses are so important to American electoral politics?

3. Don't forget biofuels, corn-based ethanol.
No snark.

There may well be some influence between these various policies and products and the Iowa caucuses, and politics in general.

Though I wouldn't venture a guess as to how great the influence may be.

6. Subsidies make corn syrup cheaper than sugar, yes.
And that's why so many companies use it instead of sugar.

Does it cause obesity more than cane sugar? Maybe. There is evidence it does, but it's still pretty controversial. The fact that it's so cheap means that it's in damn near everything, including stuff like bread and frozen food. That definitely doesn't help.

Do the subsidies exist because of the Iowa caucus? Meh. It's mainly because people like Monsanto give hot money injections to all our politicians. Plus, congresspeople from the farm states don't want to piss off their constituents by cutting off all that free money from the Uncle Sam.

Have you seen "Food, Inc."? If not, I think you would enjoy it.
