Officials under Jindal's authority help BP block media access

Here's a question for Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal: Why are government officials under his authority joining forces with BP to block media coverage of the oil spill?

Here's the background: Yesterday, CNN’s Jim Acosta reported that he and his camera operator were denied access to a facility treating oil-soaked wildlife despite authorization from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Acosta said he was blocked by a BP contractor calling itself the Louisiana State Animal Response Team as well as an official from the Louisiana Fish and Wildlife Service Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and a member of the Louisiana National Guard, both of which are under Gov. Jindal's control.

When the CNN crew attempted to videotape the facility, a guardsman told them to stop, saying "I’m going to have to ask you to stop taking pictures here." When CNN appealed, Chris Buco, an official from the BP contractor, also denied access, saying he had the "final" authority on who would get access to the facility. And an official from the Louisiana Fish and Wildlife Service Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (which operates under Jindal's command) defended the BP contractor's decision, saying "it’s more important for the animals to have a quiet, calm, controlled area at this point."

1. I saw that and agreed that the health of the birds would have been threatened
Edited on Fri Jun-11-10 07:07 PM by Mimosa
I watched every bit of that video yesterday. I agreed with the Louisiana Fish and Wildlife officer that media coming into the building would have disturbed the birds which absolutely require as much dark and quiet possible while under stress. Reporter's voices and camera whirring and lights can cause intense fear and stress just when quiet is required.

DH and I have done bird rescue, that's how I know.

LSART is not run by BP. BP may be paying for the services of this pre-existing group.

2. Mr Jindals is dripping in oil money..........
I put his ass in the same category as cheney becoming BPs pr man as of last week. There priority is NOT in the best interest of this country, Its all about money. If another country were ever to do what BP did it would be a act of war in my opinion, And theres no amount of money that can fix this. BP has literally destroyed the eco system from LA to (If it follows the atlantic stream) possibly NY.

BTW, Obama and Mary Landrieu have received more BP donations than Jindal ever dreamed of:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0510/36783.html

Excerpt:

BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company’s political action committees — $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals.

On top of that, the oil giant has spent millions each year on lobbying — including $15.9 million last year alone — as it has tried to influence energy policy.

During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records.

7. He's a Governor doing what he needs to do in a disaster
Sometimes things are beyond the ugliness of politics as usual.

This is the worst environmental disaster in my lifetime in an area I know and love. I know the people of Louisiana.

SOME people here love making cheap shots. Maybe you wouldn't if a real disaster like katrina or this BP caused disaster were to ruin your lives.

9. Iam quite sure EVERYBODY supports the gulf region......
In this time of disaster, But to start oppressing the media with the animals, Whats the next thing we cant see? BP has already proven that its been lying from day 1, Possibly our own federal govt. No restrictions on the media for anything related to this disaster, Period.
