'Saint Sarah' of Newsweek


The magazine (owned by The Washington Post company) that so offended Sarah Palin with its 2009 cover of her in running gear goes a little softer in its new issue.


The article, by Lisa Miller, is so insightful and sympathetic to conservatives that I can picture Newsbusters bloggers banging their heads against a wall, unable to find bits to disagree with.

Behind the Christian-military rhetoric, though, is a theology that’s generic, Griffith and other scholars say. (Though the video clip that made the rounds during the campaign of Palin being prayed over by an African minister gave foes on the left the willies, most churchgoing conservative evangelicals were completely unfazed.) In her speeches, Palin never damns anyone to hell. She never talks about sin: Discussing her daughter Bristol, accidentally pregnant at 17, she talks about responsibility. When Palin writes about her born-again experience, she talks not about an encounter with Jesus or the Holy Spirit, as so many evangelicals do, but of a sudden awareness of the awesomeness of creation. “Looking around at the incredible creation that is Alaska — the majestic peaks and midnight sun, the wild waters and teeming wildlife — I could practically see and hear and feel God’s spirit reflected in everything in nature.” Palin refers often to Ronald Reagan in her speeches, and even critics concede there’s something Reaganesque about the way she approaches faith. It’s easy. It’s optimistic. It’s future-oriented. “She seems like an ordinary Christian woman who has done extraordinary things,” says Georgetown history professor Michael Kazin.

7. "Extraordinary things"

Small town mayor and not even half a term governor of one of our least populated states.

I suppose in today's culture, being a media figure is considered an extraordinary accomplishment among the chattering classes.

There's so much wrong with that cover, I don't know where to begin. I just want her to go away.

8. What is it about this lady that people find so appealing

I always here Sarah and others on the right talking about how evil the government is and how career politicians need to be thrown out of office. But as far as I can tell this lady has lived almost her whole adult life off the government teet. Other than her book and her constant twitter updates she hasn't done a damn thing in the private sector that she and others of her ilk praise. This woman lived off the taxpayers for years and then when she was actually asked to do some real work, she bailed on her job. Without her cushy government job she would be nothing.

9. Bristol Palin did not "accidentally" get pregnant

This is one of those phrases that drives me up the wall.

What Bristol Palin did with Levi Johnston was intentional. They intended to have sex. They may not have intended that she get pregnant, but her pregnancy was not an unexpected or "accidental" consequence of their having sexual intercourse. She may have unintentionally gotten pregnant, but it was no "accident."

And you have to love the part about Sarah Palin advocating for criminalization of abortion and then telling us all she sat in a hotel room far from home and considered it.

No reporter would dare to ask Mrs. Palin about her faith, or try to get her on record about the details of her beliefs. And Sarah wouldn't dare talk to Bill Moyers, who would expose her charlatanry for what it is. So Mrs. Palin can occupy that shadowy neverworld where she isn't required to explain herself, her adoring fans know (or presume they know) what she's talking about, and the casual listener doesn't really know what she's saying (if Mrs. Palin could articulate it herself, which is rather doubtful).

Newsweek can take a stab at it, but I'd bet a dollar to a hole in a doughnut that nothing substantive is revealed in this cover story. Nevertheless, some slight, real or probably imagined, will be concocted by Mrs. Palin or the folks at News Busters to prove Newsweek's bias, and inflicted on the rest of us.
