Left in the campaign dust... Richard Pombo

Denham on way to 19th House race victory
Posted at 11:55 PM on Tuesday, Jun. 08, 2010
By John Ellis / The Fresno Bee

State Sen. Jeff Denham, who six months ago was poised to seek a state Assembly seat, now appears to be on his way to winning the Republican nomination in the 19th Congressional District.

With more than 90% of the precincts reporting just past midnight, Denham had 36.3% of the vote and former Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson was at 30.8%.

Left in the campaign dust and headed to certain defeat is the highest-profile candidate in the race -- former Tracy congressman Richard Pombo. Badly lagging is the fourth candidate, Fresno City Council Member Larry Westerlund.

snip...
For the controversial Pombo, who served 14 years in the neighboring 11th Congressional District before being defeated in 2006, it was a poor start on election night as he looks to recapture a seat in Congress.

2. I pulled a Republican ballot yesterday just to vote against him.

Felt kind of odd when I walked into the polls and asked for a Republican ballot (DTS voters get to pick our ballots at the polling place). Still, the thought of Pombo (or Patterson, a card carrying teabagger) taking over the district scared the bejeezus out of me. Denham may be a 'thug, but his voting history is a bit more centrist. If it has to be a Republican, he's the least repulsive of the pack.

And yes, I'll be voting for Goodwin this fall. I have zero confidence that she'll win though. This has been a solidly Republican district since the 1970's (no Democrat has pulled more than 40% in an election since then, and many have been down in the 20% range, so the races aren't even close). As much as I'd like to see a Democratic win here, neither Marsden or Goodwin have the organization or the funding to pull it off. Goodwin's current campaign website is among the worst I've ever seen, and provides an example of the quality Democratic campaigning we usually see here: http://www.drgoodwin.info/. This isn't a real shock though, as the state party refuses to spend any money in this district, preferring instead to redirect it to "winnable" districts. Democratic challengers in CA-19 are mostly on their own.

3. I love you for doing that, really, Pombo was my Rep. for too many terms.
He needs to just sit his fat ass down in Tracy and try to find other ways to fuck things up in the San Joaquin Valley.

Fuckin' Rat Bastard.

4. Was Pombo the one who
proposed that the US sell off the National Parks?

Pombo proposes selling off nat’l parks

BY Ana Unruh Cohen
23 SEP 2005 11:05 AM

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA), chairman of the House Resources Committee, has officially established beyond any doubt that he is no Teddy Roosevelt Republican. Today, draft legislation from his committee proposed selling off a number of national park holdings, including Theodore Roosevelt Island, home of the TR memorial in Washington, D.C.
As reported by Greenwire, the other sites include:

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, Texas
Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, Alaska
Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Alaska
Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Alaska
Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, California
Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Arizona
Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, Massachusetts
Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska
Lake Clark National Park, Alaska
Mary McLeod Bethune Council House, Washington, D.C.
Minute Man Missile National Historic Site, South Dakota
Noatak National Preserve, Alaska
Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Monument, Pennsylvania
Thomas Stone National Historic Site, Maryland
Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, Alaska

Pombo also proposes selling advertising space just about anywhere in National Parks to help generate revenue.
