Uri Avnery on Israel endangering its alliance with Turkey
http://readersupportednews.org/opinion/134-134/2143-kill-a-turk-and-rest

Making enemies of the Turks is more than foolish. For decades, Turkey has been our closest ally in the region, much more close than is generally known. Turkey could play, in the future, an important role as a mediator between Israel and the Arab-Muslim world, between Israel and Syria, and, yes, even between Israel and Iran. Perhaps we have succeeded now in uniting the Turkish people against us - and some say that this is the only matter on which the Turks are now united.

This is Chapter 2 of "Cast Lead". Then we aroused most countries in the world against us, shocked our few friends and gladdened our enemies. Now we have done it again, and perhaps with even greater success. World public opinion is turning against us.

This is a slow process. It resembles the accumulation of water behind a dam. The water rises slowly, quietly, and the change is hardly noticeable. But when it reaches a critical level, the dam bursts and the disaster is upon us. We are steadily approaching this point.

"Kill a Turk and rest," the mother says in the joke. Our government does not even rest. It seems that they will not stop until they have made enemies of the last of our friends.

1. IBTL....
Articles by Uri Avnery about such an important issue deserve far more than to be swiftly hidden away in the I/P forum.

He mentioned that Israel could have just searched the flotilla and let it go on its way. Why would Israel need to search when the cargo was inspected and cleared by both Turkey and Malta? Israel seems to be implying that both those countries aren't to be trusted, which is both lame and delusional...

2. And the article is not only ghettoized on DU -- it nees exposure in the U.S. media.
This is a voice that all Americans need to hear.

3. I just posted this on FB with this note
"I was in London with a South African Jew (and Zionist who used to work for the Israeli army) who currently lives in the US, a Turkish Jew who currently lives in Paris, and a Turkish Muslim who currently lives in the US when the Gaza flotilla incident happened. All three had basically the same reaction - this article by Uri Avnery very eloquently expands on and explains that reaction:"

The consistent reaction of all three of my colleagues was "This was a very stupid thing for Israel to do." Even the Zionist. In fact, the Turkish Jew thinks this is the death knell for the state of Israel and none of the others disagreed with her.

My FB friends include two rabidly Zionist Jews, a number of rabidly pro-Palestinian non-Jews, and a number of moderate pro-two-state-solution Jews and non-Jews. This is the only thing I've felt safe posting about the situation so far :) and I still think I'm going to be flamed by the Zionists. It will be interesting.
