WTF is the problem with South Carolina?
I remember the 2000 presidential primary when supporters of George W. Bush smeared John McCain and his family. Now they called Nikki Haley a "raghead" and everything just short of "slut". What the hell is the matter with South Carolina. I know it is Lee Atwater's native state, but he died many years ago so that's no excuse. What is in the water down there?

2. It's a very racist state that's what's wrong with it
And General Sherman went much too easy on them in his ride to the sea if you ask me.

10. Nothing screams intelligence and informed opinion like broad-brush statements.

4. Could have something to do with the education system in S.C.
Or, to quote Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina 2007:

“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”

Joking, I am sure we have some brilliant South Carolinians on this board and no one state has a monopoly on intelligence or ignorance - but I could not resist - I actually think it may read worse as a transcript than hearing her say it!

5. Still, it is more intelligent than anything that's come out of Sarah Palin's mouth.

7. Don't blame the water...
People flock here because of low taxes. Low taxes=underfunded public school systems. Keep the people stupid and ignorant, and you can do whatever you want to them. It's much easier to control them with fear when you have them under your thumb.

8. It's not the state. It's some of the people in the state.
I avoid SC because of some of the people who live there. The state, itself, is fine.

9. I'm actually thinking I'll vote for Haley in the Rep primary
I hate this kind of smear politics - hated it when it was done to Clinton too.

I voted for McCain in the 2000 Rep primary here, then Dem in the fall of course. I think I'll do the same thing this year and vote for Haley Tuesday just to do my part to make sure these kind of slimy tactics don't succeed.

11. Short answer? The Southern Baptist Church
They've married religious and political lunacy for years to the point that both Bill Moyers and Jimmy Carter left in sheer disgust. They are ruthless to their enemies and will destroy them with any means they have, especially character assassination in the press.

Whatever you see in the press is mild compared to what people here from the pulpit, though.

Much of SC is still rural and the churches are the centers of all social support systems. The chains they wrap around the minds of their people are the most durable I've ever seen.

13. A famous quote
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 01:51 PM by CarlaLevin
When South Carolina was considering secession and "independence" before the Civil War, from a Judge James Petigru, who opposed secession:

“South Carolina is too small to be a nation and too large to be a lunatic asylum.”

That, and it's chock full of Tea Party Repukes.

BTW, "they" didn't call Nikki a "raghead". One repuke asshole did that. Some of us were appalled.
