a familiar pod of dolphins reported making choking sounds from their blow holes. This was well before oil land fall and I suspect they came in from the deeper waters to be around people and away from sharks.

But "fish, birds, and the beaches" is the media mantra. (not that the latest bird imagery isn't hideous)
