Florida, of all states, is taking Global Warming seriously
State Officials, Scientists In Tampa To Draft Global Warming Strategy

from the Tampa Trib

By MIKE SALINERO The Tampa Tribune, Published: May 8, 2007

TAMPA - Top Florida scientists will join state policy-makers in Tampa this week for separate meetings aimed at mapping a state strategy for global warming.

Tonight, the Climate Change Advisory Group to the Florida Energy Commission will hold its second public hearing at Tampa International Airport. During the meeting, the advisory group will listen to residents, businesses and interest groups who have ideas about how the state should deal with climate change.

On Wednesday, a three-day conference on climate change begins at the Tampa Renaissance Hotel. Panels consisting of scientists and government officials will look at the unique challenges Florida faces as the climate and water temperatures warm.

The fact that two climate change meetings are happening in the same week in the same Florida city is one more sign that state leaders are taking the danger of global warming seriously, said Susan Glickman, Florida policy director for the National Resources Defense Council.

A glimpse of sanity in my world... how nice. A baby step, for sure, but a step all the same.

1. It makes perfect sense for Florida to be very concerned
Given that it has a mean elevation just 100 feet above sea level.

I can't remember when I started being ashamed to be a Floridian, but it's pretty much second-nature now.:eyes:

7. LOL - do you cringe when you see a thread with Florida in the title?
I usually sigh, prepare myself, and THEN open it to read it!

3. Florida would be one of the first states I'd think would be serious.
After the summers of 04 and 05, they recognize how dangerous global warming is. I hope that idea catches on.

12. There are still signs of damage from those storms.

I live right where three of them crossed paths. There are even a few blue tarps on roofs, torn and tattered as they may be. Those who had insurance found how unreliable insurance cos can be.

4. Hey, don't sell Charlie Crist short. He's an R, but he's pretty progressive.
He's the one that tossed away the diebold machines for paper ballots, and is working on voter reform as well.

He's not Jeb Bush that's for sure...

9. There was an article around
here the other day that said Crist was "undoing what jeb had done". From everything I read..I thought Crist would be good on the environment, too.

For some reason this Guv(R) of Florida is acting like a rino. Giving felons back their civil rights!

"In a change billed by some as historic but others as incremental, Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet this morning approved a plan to give back the civil rights of tens, and possibly hundreds, of thousands of convicted felons.

Crist and Cabinet members voted 3-1 to overhaul the state's Jim Crow-era system forcing most convicted felons who fulfilled their sentences to complete a cumbersome -- sometimes impossible -- application process before their civil rights are restored, including the rights to vote, hold elected office and serve on a jury.

Under the new process, most convicted felons -- as many as eight in 10, according to Crist's office -- will no longer have to wait for a hearing before their rights are restored. People convicted of more violent crimes, such as car-jacking, kidnapping and assault, will still have to go through a hearing, but they will no longer have to wait five years first. Only people convicted of the most heinous crimes -- murder and sex crimes -- will have to go through the full application process.

Crist administration officials vowed to immediately begin combing through the ranks of convicted felons already released from prison -- which the state estimates at 628,000 -- to identify those now suddenly eligible to get their civil rights back."

13. of that we can be certain, and now I read that
there's been a cap placed on the Citizens Insurance fund premiums until 2009. WTF happened to our legislature? They didn't roll over for the insurance companies. Charlie Christ is trying like hell to work some of the problems out in this state. I admit I did not vote for him thinking he was bush lite, so far, he's been full of surprises. GO Charlie.

I hope he reads DU, maybe he does.
